Cycle Trip - Sunshine Coast/Vancouver Island Loop

The pace of this trip will be moderate. Please don't sign up unless you're confident in your biking abilities.

You must be comfortable/knowledgeable about riding in traffic and be able to ride up some fairly major hills with a loaded bike. We will plan on doing 60-80kms per day.

You'll need a bike in good repair - a hybrid type bike is ideal for this kind of trip but a road bike would do. It wouldn't be suitable for a mountain bike. You'll need two spare tubes. I can help with changing flat tires and some minor repairs but hopefully you'll have had your bike in for some regular maintenance before leaving on this trip.

The plan will be to camp so we will need all the gear for that - paniers, tent, stove, etc. I have done this trip a number of times and motel type accommodation along this trip can be very reasonable so we may decide to spend one night  in a motel along the way.... ahhh, a shower and a real bed!

Day 1: Vancouver to Porpoise Bay Campsite on the Sunshine Coast (take the Horseshoe Bay to Langdale ferry)
Day 2: Porpoise Bay Campsite to Saltery Bay (take Earls Cove Ferry)
Day 3: Saltery Bay to Comox (take Powell River to Comox ferry)

Day 4: Comox to Qualicum Beach

Day 5: Qualicum beach to Vancouver (take the Nanaimo to Horshoe Bay ferry)

Great trip! I couldn't have asked for a better group to go with... the weather wasn't perfect (did someone say monsoon??) but we had a fabulous time anyway :)

Great time with wonderful people. Well organised and the side trips to the islands were a bonus. Wonderful views and a big Thank You to the Hornby BC Ferries staff for being wonderful hosts (loved the specially freshly brewed coffee and inquiring and arranging campsites on the island). Thank you Doug for fine tuning my bike. Thanks Elspeth for a wonderful adventureous few days and look forward the KVR trip.

For those of us coming from far away, where is the best spot for parking at horseshoe bay?

A not so well known and free spot is the Whyte lake trailhead parking spot. It's near the bridge that goes across the highway into Horseshoe Bay. You can park there overnight. It's not that big so can fill up quickly on weekends. Some islanders seem to be using it when heading over for the weekend. http://westvancouver....

Hi everyone, Its been awhile since I posted this and there are a number of you that I don't know on this trip, so can you please re-confirm that you're coming? Also, I have changed the meeting place to the ferry terminal in Horseshoe Bay. We will meet there at 8:50am to catch the 9:20 sailing to Langdale on the Sunshine Coast. Please remember we'll be camping, so come prepared for that. There will however be places along the way to shop. Please make sure you and your bike are ready for this trip! Make sure you have one or two spare tubes. Please email me if you have any questions.

Plan to ride to Horseshoe Bay from City Centre Station Vancouver riding over the Lion's Gate Bridge and using the Spirit Multi-Use Trail (see Map link) from West Vancouver Park Royal (6am Departure from Park Royal). Can anyone confirm if this trail is complete? If so, anyone care to ride together?

    I am in.
For parking at Horseshoe Bay there is a Lions Club lot under the highway just above the terminal accessed by Marine Drive. It is $8 per day on weekends and free week days (last time I used it).

long story short, just too much work, I have to bail out from this, might never be like this, weather like, again. Sorry, I tried, but cannot ignore work commitments and it is not time yet even for short holiday
