Red Raw is where I started out. Comics need a place to start. It's the best new act night in the country. No comic can have a career without doing this gig. It is, therefore, also the most important show in the country.
An experienced, established emcee presents a conveyor belt of acts, new material and new comedians.
Around four or five new acts take the stage amalgamated with the established acts doing new material. Regulars are Frankie Boyle, Daniel Sloss (a former student of mine!), and Kevin Bridges. They all appear regularly here.
Established comedians need somewhere to try out new stuff. We work our asses off in dive bars, new act nights and any space that will allow us a platform to help shape our material. So that when we go out onto those big Saturday night gigs, we can then make it look easy.
This show is where all the Scottish comedians do that. And a few from further afield (Stuart Lee being a prime example).
But you don't go to see 'names' you go because you see the fledglings struggle on their feet, die on their arse - their hopes and dreams shattered before a live audience - and the woman who books the big gigs standing at the back with a pad and a pen, scrutinizing their every move. She holds their future in her hands.
You will also see behind the mask, see through the smoke and mirrors, see tragedy and comedy come together in a clash of fantasy and realism and, occasionally, you will see the magic appear out of the dust and it is in those moments, dreams are made reality.
All for two squid!!!
Larks & laughter,
