Approximately 10 miles
Estimated time 5 - 6 hours including one hour lunch stop
We are offering this low level walk as a warm up to our upcoming winter walks. It would be ideal for anyone wishing to walk, but not climb, in the Pentlands. The inclines are gentle and not high. That said, this is a remote area and walking boots, waterproofs, food and water are essential. Please also bring a torch as we may be walking out in darkness.
Catch the no 44 bus which leaves Meadowbank house at 10.13, Leopold Place at 10.20 and Haymarket/Dalry Road at 10.36. See link below.
Meet at the Main St. bus stop on Bavelaw Rd in Balerno - just past Scotmid. From there we will walk up to the Harlaw Rangers Station ( toilet available ) and then along to the Harlaw car park and from there into the Pentlands Regional Park. The path, which can be rocky and muddy, goes between Harbour Hill and Bells Hill with a slight incline before dropping down to Glencorse Reservoir. We will walk past Glen Cottage to the Rangers Station where there is shelter for anyone wishing to eat a packed lunch, and there are toilets. The Flotterstone Inn is close by and offers food and drink and we will be having lunch there with a one hour stop.
This is a suitable escape point for those preferring a shorter walk. The Stagecoach bus passes along the main road just beyond the Flotterstone Inn ( see link below for timetable ). The rest of us will retrace our steps back to Balerno.
Those with cars can park in Balerno or at the car park at Harlaw, which we will pass - please let us know which you will be doing and note that the Meetup time is 11.15am in Balerno so allow time for us to reach Harlaw if you are parking there.
Dogs are welcome on this walk but must be under control at all times and on a short lead if there are sheep around.
Walkers are responsible for their own safety, and no member or organizer from the group can be held responsible in case of any mishap. By signing up for this walk you are understood to have agreed to these terms.
