Richard Dawkins at the Lyceum 7.30 pm

There a quite a few Humanists, Secularists and Skeptics are going to this event, and we are meeting in the Shakespeares Pub at 6.30 pm before the event, and intend to meet up afterwards to discuss. So, if anyone else is going along, or might decide to get a ticket, please let me know that you are coming and I'll look out for you. After the event I will stand outside and let you know which pub we are going to.

Richard Dawkins: The Making of a Scientist

Recently voted by Prospect Magazine as the Top Thinker of 2013, Richard Dawkins is a pioneering scientist and public thinker who is famous (and infamous to some) around the world.  Dawkins was bound to have biology in his genes: he was born to parents who were enthusiastic naturalists, and linked through his wider family to a clutch of accomplished scientists.  But what were the influences that shaped his life and intellectual development? Who and what inspired him?

This promises to be a fascinating evening in which Richard Dawkins will discuss his memoir An Appetite for Wonder, in which he paints a colourful, richly textured canvas of his life. We will finally be able to understand the private influences that shaped the world’s most famous atheist, who, more than anyone else in his generation, explained our own origins. Richard will be in conversation with Professor Aubrey Manning.

Great to meet you all even though the talk was a little stale! Thought you might appreciate this take on Dawkins' book...

those whomissed it, missed nothing. A real non-event. They may be decent people but this was not worth £12-50. A cross between Still Game & Tompkinsons school days... Idrifted off and could've missed the reminiscences about the 50 mile hope or Strangely-Brown....

It was a bit slow for me. I think Aubrey said too much about his views, we were there to hear Richards. Fine, he was there to plug his new book and the next, tempt us to buy, but give us a chance to ask Richard questions. I just wished Gary from the Edinburgh Secular Society had got an opportunity to ask his. It would have made a more interesting evening.

I found the pub before upsetting and the pub after was upsetting to begin with until I spoke to Elaine but I found it difficult to make out what she was saying most of the time which was frustrating because I was interested in what she was talking about. Had a good conversation with Garry afterwords. I think would have liked the Richard Dawkins thing to be bit longer, but I got him to sign two of my books and I shook his hand and he winked at me, so that’s not so bad.

I hope everyone enjoyed last night, especially the pub before and afterwards. That is where the best conversations are. I look forward to seeing a lot of you next week at the Bellevue where we have space to ourselves.

As there are going to be over 20 of us meeting in Shakespeares, I have booked tables at the back. I plan to be there just after 6.00 pm if anyone is coming early.
