Talk by Lara Celini on Volunteering - Please note our new location

Speaker: Lara Celini

Talk title: The Edinburgh Landscape

Many of you will already know Lara, as she has been a long term Committee Member of the HSS-EG, and has served for a few years as the Convenor of the Edinburgh group, and has recently expanded her work experience to become a Humanist Celebrant, as well as working in the volunteer sector.

So, for this talk, she will be wearing her hat as Public Services Manager at Volunteer Centre Edinburgh Lara Celini will provide an overview of the Volunteering Landscape in Edinburgh, the role of the Volunteer Centre and the services it offers, a definition of what volunteering is, why people volunteer, some of the benefits of volunteering, and how to get more involved (should you wish to!). Learn some interesting facts about volunteering, and be prepare to be surprised by what you can do.

Lara has almost two decades of experience of working with volunteers, a dozen of them working at Volunteer Centre Edinburgh in various roles – including organisational capacity building, developing trustees, volunteer recruitment and communications.

Lara is also a Registered Assessor for “Investing in Volunteers” – the UK Quality standard in volunteering, and also regularly volunteers herself, as a member of the Edinburgh Humanist group committee, as a Parent Facilitator on the Council’s Raising Children with Confidence Course and as a Volunteer for the parent network “Parent Spark”.

After the talk, there is a small bar which we may use depending on numbers, so we do need suggestions of bars close by, so please let us know if you can recommend any.

Volunteer Centre Edinburgh’s 2013 Annual Report takes the form of a short film (appropriately shot and edited by one of their talented volunteers) It reviews the performance and impact of the Centre over the year, and includes unscripted highlights shared by staff at their annual team volunteering day at Jupiter Artland. http://www.volunteeredinburgh.org.uk/about/Annual_Reports

I was delighted that a large proportion of our members and supporters are already actively involved in volunteering (no surprise there really!). Amongst those present at last night’s meeting we had folk volunteering in the instruction in seated exercise, gardening, dog walking, on their local parent council, volunteering for the Beavers and Woodcraft Folk, as walk leaders, on their local community council, as trustees, and for a range of good causes including the Samaritans, Diabetes UK, Amnesty International etc. All good stuff!

Hi John - More secure and longer term funding for voluntary sector organisations would certainly make a positive difference. There are lots of questions around who is best placed to deliver various types of service, and the involvement of volunteers in their delivery ...

Hello Lara, have had a miserable cold since the 23rd so am cancelling my reply for tomorrow. If I feel a better, I hope to come along as it sounds excellent.
