French Grammar Exercise - In English

Hello French learners,

This is the 2nd meeting.  Depending on when you read your email, I finally decided to do this on Wednesday to give everyone more time to do their homework but will start at 6:15pm as I work till 6pm.  Sorry for all the changes... I am trying to accommodate my schedule as well those who have given me feedback thus far.

We will meet at the Edmonton City Centre West Side on the main floor (102 St and 102 Ave) where Second Cup is located in front of ATB Bank.  Because this is after 6pm, parking meters along 103 Ave and 103 St by HSBC/Greyhound will be recommended for a free parking zone.

This meetup is mostly in English and we speak French only to get acquainted with the written structure, listening skills, and word acquisition in French.  All participants must do a minimal amount of work prior to attending the meetup. Please bring your laptop or paper/pen to participate in this meetup.

There are five basic exercises:

1.  Reading:

Please bring an article or an written work in French that you have read and understood.  Pick something that has words/expression that you had to search its meaning so that others can learn them as well.  We will have at least 2 participants to volunteer in reading a sentence or two to the group.  Depending on time, we may do more.

2.  Listening/Writing:

A sentence or two will be read once and then read once more while other members will write what they heard.  We then compare how right we are!

3.  Translation:  English-French/French-English

Each participant will pick a short paragraph from someone's article/written work and will translate them into English.  Yes, you can use a dictionary or a translator if need be.  This exercise is for you to learn new words and understand French more.

4.  Verb Conjugations:

This is mostly a self-learning part of the meetup where a topic is introduce and anyone can learn them from home.  If there is any question, participant can discuss them at the meetup.  The topic for this meetup is DR and MRS P. VANDERTRAMP and the House of Etre.  If you are not familiar with either one, here is a link for you to read:

House of ETRE:

5  Vocabulary: Bring any 5 French words which doesn't sound/look like an English word.  Prepare a sentence that defines what the word is and participants will try to guess what the word means in English.

Hello folks... Please ensure you have done your homework of searching for a French article that you can understand and translate as much as you can. If you are an absolute beginner or limited knowledge of French, you still have to pick a French article and you will likely spend a bit more time to understand/translate the article you have chosen. The article can be very short... you can bring a small section. During the exercise, we will try to challenge the other members by translating 2 or 3 short sentence of the article.

Lastly, please bring 5 French words and write a sentence in French that describes the meaning of the word.

    See you guys tomorrow

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
