French Grammar Exercise - In English

PLEASE READ THE MEETUP DESCRIPTION BEFORE YOU RSVP YES! Please do the required homework to make sure you are maximizing this opportunity to learn French. This meetup is primarily done in English to accommodate all levels.

Although all levels are welcome, absolute beginners may find this meetup difficult while intermediate levels will find it a refreshing review.  Because this is primarily in English, native French speakers may find the phase slower, but if you are patient and like sharing your knowledge, please do come and join this French grammar exercise.

French Grammar Exercise: This meetup is twice a week Mondays and Thursdays alternating between Whyte Ave and Jasper Ave location.  Monday nights will be on Whyte Ave and Thursday nights will be on Jasper Ave, both between 5:30pm to 7pm.

Homework:  All participants must bring 5 things to the meetup: a written work in French, a written translation of this into English, 5 French verbs/words/phrases, laptop or paper/pen and a dictionary.

Please make sure you have read, understood and translated your work into English as you will need to assist others in understanding the written work you brought with you.

Everyone has to take the lead in getting this meetup started. Please read the five suggested exercise for the meetup. Once there are enough participants, I would suggest to get started with the following:

1. Reading: Everyone will read any 2 short sentences from your chosen written work. Many French on-line translators have a feature where it will voice out how to read the word or sentence. For example, Google Translator:

2. Listening and Writing: Each participant will listen and write the 2 short sentences that the other participants would have read. Readers may read it twice and slower if needed to ensure everyone gets to try to write what is being read.

3. Translation:  English-French/French-English: Each participant will exchange their chosen French written work with other participants who will then translate a section of the written work into English. Thereafter, you would compare your answer with the translated version of the person who brought it in.

4. Vocabulary: Bring any 5 French words which doesn't sound/look like an English word.  Prepare a sentence that defines what the word is and participants will try to guess what the word means in English. For example: Drapeau=Flag, Le drapeau du Canada est composée de rouge, blanc et une feuille d’érable.

5. Verb Conjugation: This is the self-learning part of the meetup. If there is time, you can certainly share the verb you have chosen to conjugate in all possible tenses. Suggestion is to have a notebook for this where you have different columns for the various tenses you wish to conjugate. In time, you will have a collection that you can be proud of.

For now, we will book Monday and Thursday each week. You don’t need to attend both, but certainly it is an option. Each meetup is not connected to the other so you are not loosing out if you miss one or both and attend every other week. Depending on the attendance, I can change this to once a week or cancel it altogether.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend this meetup anymore due to my schedule. I really feel that an event host is not needed. However, if you wish to step to be the event host, please let me know so I can update it.

If anyone have any questions or suggestions on how to improve this meetup, please email me directly at [masked] or thru my profile if you wish to hide your email.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
