Conversation Française- Mercredi Soir à 17:30

Salut a tous!

If you are a beginner or feeling non-confident, please join, but do understand that this is totally in French.  However, you can certainly attend and practice your French listening skill.  Just kindly tell everyone at the table and perhaps you will find that you are speaking French soon enough after a few beers ;)

O'Byrnes été choisi parce qu'il est relativement calme en début de soirée et il offre des ailes et des boissons spéciales.

Il n'y aura pas de réservation que nous ne savons pas combien d'entre vous sont intéressés à venir. Please RSVP YES only if you are for sure coming regardless of any plans or reasons.  If you are unsure, then kindly wait to RSVP to not impact the decision of the ones for sure attending vs the ones who are not so certain.

I would recommend that the first person try to save table(s) by the entrance.  To the right of the entrance, there is a small room that can accommodate upto 12 will be my first option!  Otherwise, there are plenty of tables to the left of the entrance to choose!

Lastly, there is no event host for this French Chat.  I don't think there is no need for one.  Simply start up a conversation in French the second there are two of you.  It is highly recommended that you update your profile with a picture so that others can try to find you in the bar.  And if you have access to the internet, please post a message on this meetup so that others can get a heads up of your location.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please don't hesitate to send me a message.

In case you are wondering, here is the rational why O'Byrnes at 5:30pm was chosen:

O'Byrnes was chosen because they have a big place, offer happy hour prices from 2 to 8pm and outside of downtown, it is pretty central. Also, there is paid parking to the building beside, to the left of O'Byrnes.

However 5:30pm was chosen because having lived in this area for over 5 years, I know that FREE parking is still possible before 6pm because the people that lived in this area works elsewhere and while those who don't live in the area comes for the many events Old Stratchona offers throughout the night.  Moreover, after 6pm, there are free metered parking with members only having to pay a dollar if a 3O min meter parking is available.  There are at least 20 of them, right in front, across the street and around the corner on 107St and more along 109st or along Whyte Ave.

likely 6.45 or 7 might be a better time, although at that time it might be next to impossible to find a table or to have any conversation at all, given the noise. Another option is to start at 5.30 and have it last until 8 p.m. This way, it allows more people to join at a more relaxed pace, while still being able to obtain a table . I think quite a few people wouldn't mind spending 2+ hrs chatting in French.

I agree that later might be easier for some. I frequently can't make anything before 6.

Another option at times is at someones house...but we can leave that to the side for now.

For now, if you need to grab table earlier then do. But at least if you stay later, it gives me a chance because I work day shifts in north side

I posted this question so that everyone can see the kind of response this type of question can get. The result is not unanimous, really quiet non-existent with only 4 members commenting. This is not surprising, not because of lack of interest; I really think it is because that members have a hard time commenting on a best time when their own schedule can change and they don't really attend every meetup. I have been organizing meetups for several years and for different groups. I basically have accepted that it is not possible to offer the best location and best times to have everyone come. It is either too early or too late or too far or not central enough, or not enough parking. Therefore, in the past, I have tested different times and locations and what you see is the result: O'Byrnes meetup at 5:30. If you look at attendance history of Wednesday French Chat, attendance fluctuates. The first 3 weeks in September, there were 9-10 attendees, while the last 2 had been 3-4.

As a compromise, I will rotate every Wednesday between 5:30pm and 6:45pm and assess the situation as needed. But having been an O'Byrne regular for several years, the later you start, the less likely you will find a table. I pick 6:45pm not 7pm to give the group a chance to secure a table vs not. When winter comes, the patio will be shut down pushing people indoors to compete with tables. With more people in the bar, the noise level goes way up. As I indicated before, if you have a suggestion on a new location and/or new times, please take the lead and book a meetup. Every member can do this. If you want to pick a day where there is already a planned meetup, I can cancel or move that meetup if need be to accommodate yours. Thanks

If you truly want to practice French, a small group of 2-5 members works just as well and sometimes better than a group of 9-10. Just remember, every opportunity to speak French is what this meetup is all about.

There is another dilemma, the later we start the noisier it is, which make a conversation with advanced French level people uneasy, I can't imagine for people with medium or beginner level in French.
I am supporting Joana's point, we can start as usual and people arrives when they can as long as the other are aware of this point, I found this system quite common lately, and if it works.
If you can make it on time, that's fabulous; if not, we'll do your best to arrive as early as possible. It is casual conversation.

That makes more sense having it last longer to 8 so at least it's worth the while to go

To me, 7 or if needed 645 will give time. I myself live north and would fight rush hour and you know parking sucks on whyte at any time. At least you may find parking at those times

Final tally will be made on Sunday... giving everyone 3 days notice what time this meetup will be.

Most people work day jobs. By time you get off work, fight rush hour traffic and parking is bad on whyte...its almost impossible to attend. Could you make meetups like this just a little later..better for anyone..better attendance
