Free discussion

Due to illness, Sjoerd won't be able to give the feature presentation. We'll have a free discussion instead.

The location has been changed.

Introduction & Personal Updates

We start each meeting by going around the table and giving updates about EA-related events in our personal lives, followed by plans until the next meetup. The idea is to share activities the group might be interested in and encourage each other.

Game Theory: People Respond to Incentives... How?

Every economist knows: people respond to incentives. But in what way?

Suppose we would like to increase the amount of blood donations in the Netherlands. How should we go about it? An economist would suggest to incentivize people. Will a small payment induce people to donate blood? Richard Titmuss formulated a surprising answer to this question.

During this meetup we will look at the myriad ways in which people respond to incentives using insights from game theory and behavioral economics.

We will not only be surprised by Titmuss but learn how people can best be stimulated to behave altruistically.

Optional reading as preparation is the following paper by Samuel Bowles.

Listen up, everyone. I just got word that Sjoerd has fallen ill, so he won't be able to give his presentation. So for the second time in a row, the meetup is now without a topic. In the future we'll make sure to have better backup plans, but for now we don't have much of a choice other than free discussion.

Bad luck, but I'm sure we'll have something interesting to talk about.
