Are you curious about the black bear photos and appearances in Elk Island National Park? Are you interested in Citizen Science? We could use your assistance on Sunday, September 7th 2014 with the meso-carnivore project.
You MUST be a member of the Friends of Elk Island Society in order to be included under our insurance policy. Therefore we ask only members or those wishing to register as members to register for this event. Individual memberships are $15 and family memberships are $25. We will meet at the Entrance to Elk Island National Park in the visitor center parking lot and carpool out to the sites.
We will visit 4 wildlife camera sites to check for DNA hair samples, switch out memory cards and re-stock bait (extremely smelly paste). As the PhD student, Frances Stewart says, “It is smelly and tasty to them,” Stewart says, “but it’s pretty putrid when it gets to 27 C.”
Some hiking is in store but no more than ~2 km for the morning. Ensure you bring water, food, sunscreen, bug spray, good hiking boots, rubber boots (some wet areas), a camera and a sense of adventure. There is one high fence that needs to be climbed to get to a site. If anyone is uncomfortable we can skip that site and I can do it later. We will provide any equipment required for the study, bear spray, first aid kit and transportation to sites.
We look forward to meeting you. Feel free to ask questions below. If anyone can carpool to Elk Island National Park please post below as well.
