January Hike and Lunch

Meet at 10:00 am at the Tawayik Lake parking lot.

** Update **

We learned today that the Oster Lake Road is closed until after the weekend and is therefore unavailable for hiking. We will meet as arranged but instead of hiking the Oster Lake road / Tawayik Trail we will hike the Simmons Trail. This trail is somewhat shorter at 3.5 km (1 to 2 hours hiking).

After the hike hot food and refreshments will be available in the Tawayik Lake shelter. (We're planning soup and a bun plus vegetarian chili and maybe even turkey weiners).

As always:
Regular Parks Canada entry fees apply
Hikers should dress for the weather
The hike will not go ahead if the temperature that day is below -20 C.

Trail maps are here.

Weather forecasts can be found here.

It was really a great time! The walk was just long enough for the cold weather, the company was fascinating and the hot food was much appreciated!!! I look forward to Family Day activities in February. Excellent job, Liz and Rick!

A number of hardy souls (should that be fool-hardy) showed up and braved the weather. We all had a good time.

Cold fingers and toes, but it was a great hike. Incredible chili was hot and welcoming after.

Thank you for organizing the event. It is nice to go out. I enjoy walking with the participants and delicious food! Once again, thanks for Imran's ride and Trina's instructions.

No once you were out on the trail and dressed for the weather it wasn't too bad.

Ok, looks like Brian and Cecilia are not coming tomorrow. I will give a ride to Shu (Ft. Saskatchewan) and Trina (Sherwood Park). Beth hasn't replied yet. Beth, do you still need a ride?

Yes, dogs are allowed in the park, however they should be kept on a leash.

Are dogs allowed along for this walk?

So it seems like it's going to be cold. However, it looks like a few of us will be there regardless of the weather. The shelter at Tawayik is walled and heated. Even if we don't do much hiking we'll have the food!

Imran, thanks that would be much appreciated! If no one else local from Edmonton offers before Saturday perhaps we should get in contact to see how the pick up should work.

Well, if noone from Edmonton is able to, I don't mind going out to the city and bring people in (I'm in Sherwood Park).

I am also interested in hitching a ride from Edmonton since I don't own a car. I live downtown Edmonton near 103 St and Jasper but could take transit at meet elsewhere.

Would anyone be able to give Cecilia Hutchinson a ride into The Park? I'm assuming she lives in Edmonton...

We have members in Edmonton and at least two of our board live in town. I'll put the word out that you need a ride. Please message me a few days before the hike if you have nothing worked out.
