Inaugural JavaScript MVC Jungle meetup

  • February 26, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Our first presenter will be Jon Buffington from Fuse Elements.

Jon has more than twenty years of entrepreneurial and technical leadership under his belt. Jon is a full-stack mobile and web software application development and data visualization engineer.  Jon is equally proficiency in ember.js as he is in java and has successfully implemented the MVC pattern in javascript using a combination of tools, strategies, and discipline.

Should be a good kick off.

Not enough time. Boilerplate presentation was good, but like others I was hoping for more of a deep dive. Also, I was really looking forward to the Angular bits as we are evaluating it for use at my current job.

I tried to live tweet the talk a bit. I ended up using #mvcjungle hashtag for most of them (first few are missing the tag). Should have references to a lot of the tools/libraries mentioned. https://twitter.com/search?q=%23...

Excellent intro into the JavaScript MVC landscape. Speaker was very good at presenting complex ideas into an easy to understand way. Looking forward to future meetups.

The kind folks at Near Infinity Corporation are allowing us to use their facilities - so we can now accept 80. The time has been changed to 6:30 to 9:00 pm. Presentation will start promptly at 7:00 PM.

I'm a big fan of jQuery and Node.JS (non-block async I/O) and Javascript as great, flexible, loosely typed general-purpose language. And I really like Doug Crockford's work. And honestly, I"m actually NOT much of a polyglot, and I don't want to have to learn lots of languages & frameworks. So naturally I'm excited about JS MVC jungle. And, I just watched (5am this Sunday) Brian Ford's talk from JSConf-2012 talk "Why Node.JS" So, let me ask the question (as he did) in a serious way: "Why MVC Jungle?" And by that I actually mean, what is "better" and are "JS MVC frameworks" any better than *OTHER* MVC non-JS frameworks, that are also high performing, widely adopted, easy to use MVC frameworks? Again, I'm trying NOT to be critical, but trying to understand REAL advantages, REAL benefits. And I"m already kindred spirit with you all. Thanks again, -Rich

Another venue would be fine, but I hope it'll be in Reston. It's nice to see a meetup that isn't out of the way.

    February 9, 2013

    • Matt L.

Agreed - were looking to keep this in Reston/Herndon area if possible.

A lot of interest. Were looking for a larger venue so more folks can attend. Will let you know if the venue changes.

I'll shoot you an email tomorrow. I may be able to help get a bigger venue for you in Herndon or Reston. FYI I am the organizer for NoVA Web Development User Group. Looking forward to this event you organized. Would a 50 person venue be enough or do you think it could 100?

      February 9, 2013

    • Matt L.

Thanks for the offer. Lets connect and discuss. 50 seems right.

Everyone - some more detail on the presentation for this meetup.

TOPIC: JavaScript for the Intrepid Developer

ABSTRACT: This talk will survey the current techniques, libraries and frameworks, and tools for building modern JavaScript Web Applications. The intrepid developer will be exposed to:
    * Techniques for implementing maintainable applications across a team (e.g., modules and testing).
    * Libraries and Frameworks to accelerate development while mitigating technical complexity. We will compare Angular.js, Backbone.js, and Ember.js frameworks. We will highlight additional supporting libraries.
    * Tools for building larger applications. We will demonstrate build tools and how they integrate into continuous integration systems.
