The Melbourne Emergence Meetup Group Monthly Meetup

Chris Watkins, one of the founders of the Appropedia global Wiki website (http://www.appropedia.org) and community that is focused around "collaborative solutions in sustainability, appropriate technology and poverty reduction." Chris will talk about Appropedia's current approach and is interested in looking at new potential users and contributors to the site in Australia.

One of Appropedia's core philosophical tenets is "service learning".
Service learning using Appropedia helps to create an essential
knowledge base for the world via learning experiences for individuals and classes. The Appropedia Foundation and the Appropedia community work with universities via service learning courses, as well as service learning programs to create these opportunities.

After presentations and discussions we expect to head just around the corner to Toto's Pizza House at 101 Lygon Street. (Not sure about January at this stage.)

Our future agenda remains flexible but will continue to include:

  • encouraging wide ranging discussion of the emergence of organisation across the great domains: social, biological, physical and computational; and how that understanding might guide us to act in the world;
  • sharing updates on our projects: Kororoit Institute, Bill's TOMOK papers, Tony's cellular automata metaverse, Patrick's progress on open transport planning, Adam's Humanity+ and Singularity Summits, and our battles against academic/bureaucratic resistance.

If you aren't sure what we mean by emergence, the Wikipedia page is a good starting point.
