Death and the Powers opera

Science fiction and poignant family drama combine in one of the most stunning, cutting-edge operas of the 21st century, with a libretto by former Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, coming to the stage of the Winspear Opera House in a production directed by Diane Paulus, designed by Alex McDowell (Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report) and conducted by Nicole Paiement (TDO’s The Lighthouse).

This visually spectacular robot pageant by MIT Media Lab’s Tod Machover tells the story of a terminally ill billionaire, sung by Robert Orth, who downloads his consciousness into “the System” and proceeds to use all his powers to persuade his loved ones to join him there. Without bodies, without the possibility of touch, sex, suffering, and death — are we still genuinely human?

Explore these existential questions and much more in a piece Variety described as “playful, lyrical and…mesmerizing.” Also starring Joélle Harvey as Miranda, Patricia Risley as Evvy, and Hal Cazalet in his Dallas Opera debut as Nicholas.

    Quite an operatic adventure!

I wasn't able to attend with the meet-up after all and went to the Wed eve performance. It was OK, not something I'd want to see again. Guess a better word, it was "interesting." The performers were great, the light show was entertaining, but the story line was a bit far-fetched and I didn't find the humorous lines all that funny LOL. The concept seemed to follow a lot of modern day themes, can we transfer our essence into cyberspace and remain, or become nothing more than a databank of facts less our humanity. Or that's what I got from it.. look forward to the next one!

I am glad I saw it too, but my verdict is still out on how I feel about the ability of this particular production to use the operatic style of music to convey a story and human emotions.

I will be near the Will Call area around 1:15-1:30 with the Encore sign and meet those not attending the pre-show lecture. How about all of us who want to go out after the show meet near the Will Call area and decide where to go.

Now that I think about it, we could meet for lunch prior instead of dinner. Let me know if you have a preference.

No preference on eating. Can I just check that there isn't an introductory discussion before the performance then? Thank you for the link, Betty but as it's unusual for me not to know the text of the opera, I'm thinking of going in there blind and seeing what I think if there's no discussion :)

      February 9, 2014

    • Marian

Well, the opera is only 1 1/2 hours long, so we get out a little early for dinner. We'll just play it by ear rather than set something up since some folks want to go to the 1 p.m. talk prior to the opera.

I'm looking forward to this unusual opera. Check out the synopsis and a video clip here
http://dallasopera.org/season/death-and-the-powers/ I'd love to get together for dinner afterwards but if most would rather meet for lunch then let yourself be heard. Laurie, where did you find the info about the free panel discussion about this opera on February 9th at 2:00, at the Hamon, Winspear Opera House? I'm thinking of going but I can't find it anywhere.

    February 6, 2014

    • Betty A.

Thanks! I was thinking that it was on the 8th.

      1 · February 7, 2014

    • Laurie

Well maybe you thought that because there's also one on March 9th. for the next opera.:-)

      February 7, 2014

  • Laurie

To hear a free panel discussion about this opera on February 9th at 2:00, come to the Hamon, Winspear Opera House. (There will also be a panel discussion for "Barber of Seville" on March 9th.)

    January 31, 2014

  • Marian

If you want to sit near Betty or me, you can buy a ticket nearby or you can sit in a different area. We will meet before, at intermission and possibly after the opera. We may even set up a separate Meet-up for dinner afterwards so watch out for that one.
