Three facts:
1. Slavery is illegal in every country on earth.
2. There are more enslaved people today than at any other time in history.
3. Facts change.
Slavery comes in many guises. In addition to human trafficking from other countries, many native US and California Citizens are enslaved, by pimps, cults and criminal organizations. From migrant labor to domestic service, from sex trafficking to the Sea Org, thousands, if not tens of thousands, of slaves survive, in quiet desperation, in this state.
In many cases slavery is happening literally in someone's back yard. Phillip Garrido famously kept a young woman, and their two daughters, prisoner in a backyard compound. Despite calls from neighbors and visits by the police, he was not found out until 18 years after he'd kidnapped his first victim.
"I always wished someone could do something about it," a neighbor of Garrido's said. This neighbor knew about the compound, called the police, and was told that they could not enter his house without a warrant. Unfortunately for those young women, the neighbor--as well as others, who suspected something run afoul--did not persist, or insist, on a more thorough investigation. Three lives were ruined in consequence of their inaction.
What can you do to end slavery? Much more than making a phone call. If you suspect slavery, but are at a loss over what to do, this group will help you take action, report what you see, and follow up with law enforcement, community groups, and safe houses, to make sure that freed slaves have economic and psychological safety after their ordeal.
The purpose of this group is to end slavery in California, one county at a time. If you have a phone, a computer, and a free hour every week, you too can get involved as an abolitionist. If you want to take action, take it now; don't wait.
At this meeting we will brainstorm ideas, write letters to politicians and policymakers, design posters, fliers, stickers, and decide on a further course of action. Plus, we will have delicious fruit and vegan cookies!
This is a strategizing meeting. We want to ask, and answer, this question: "How do we alert people that slavery and human trafficking are still very real problems? Read more
