Send the Administration a Message ? Don?t Wreck the ESA
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is a landmark conservation law that has
provided a critical safety net for species on the brink of extinction. The
ESA has saved the Bald Eagle and the Grizzly Bear, and provides critically
important protections for countless other species. Recent leaks from
government employees revealed the Bush Administration is conducting an
effort to rewrite the ESA through regulations. More than 100 pages of draft
regulations were exposed, which affect nearly every aspect of the law.
These draft regulations appear to be so overbearing that they would change
the implementation of the ESA itself. Nearly every aspect of the law would
be affected by this proposal, including endangered species recovery,
consultation, listing, critical habitat, and cooperation with the states.
The proposal, if it were to become final, would remove protections for
endangered species habitat, limit the listing of new endangered species,
and allow logging, development, and other industrial practices to continue
even if those activities threaten an endangered species.
Congress had the authority to write and change laws ? not the
administration -- and Congress rejected controversial changes to the ESA
last year. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, Rep. Jim Moran and Rep. Chris Shays are
leading an effort to stand up to the administration and insure that any new
regulations do not harm endangered species or undermine the ESA. Rep.
Hinchey is sponsoring a Congressional sign-on letter to Secretary of the
Interior Dirk Kempthorne urging him to not undermine the ESA through
TAKE ACTION, ONCE: Call your Representative through the US Capitol
(202) 224-3121. Ask your Rep. to sign Rep. Hinchey's letter on ESA
regulations. Tell your Representative not to allow the administration to
undermine the ESA. Rep. Hinchey is taking Congressional signatures until
Monday, May 7.
TAKE ACTION, TWICE: On May 2 is a community National Call-In Day in support
of the Hinchey letter. So, call your Representative AGAIN on May. It your
Rep. has signed the Hinchey letter please thank them; if they have not
signed please ask them to sign.
We need Congress to stand up to the Bush administration and urge them to
stop their attacks on the ESA through harmful regulations. The Bush
administration should stop their political interference that harms
wildlife, career agency professionals and America?s natural legacy.
