Spring family carcamp in Placerita Canyon

Sat March 31st to April 1st                                          Little Hikers, Crescenta Valley Group

O: Spring family carcamp in Placerita Canyon - will we find gold?

The wildflowers are blooming, Earth Day is coming, so let's take the kids car camping and celebrate nature!  Pack the camping gear and come with us to Placerita Canyon, the Newhall site of California's original gold discovery in 1842. Short, 2 mile hike along willow and sycamore lined stream  and shaded oak groves from the nature center, and to a seasonal waterfall,  check out the wildflowers, visit the nature center and live animal show, nature crafts. Possible opportunity for a 5 mile, 1500 ft gain hike as well, on the Los Pinetos trail, based on leader availability. Learn about the rich history of the area, and the local plants.  Trip is fun for the whole family!

This is a great trip for beginning campers and for kids.  The campsite offers running water and pit toilets (the nature center has flush toilets). Partipants will need to bring their camping gear including own tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad and reusable dinnerware and cups.   Will have campfire and s'mores if weather permits and fire danger is low ( as determined by the fire department). Lunch on own, Saturday potluck dinner.   Price includes campsite fees, lightsnacks, sunday breakfast, crafts. Adults and kids over 12 : $15 (SC members), $20 (non SC members), kids 2-12yo  $10, kids younger than 2 are free.  Space is limited! Parking is free but limited, so carpooling is highly recommended. Bring board games/ card games.    All minors need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.  All participants need to sign a Sierra Club liability waiver, which must be submitted at check in at camp. Contact outdoorsygal at for address to send payment. Rain postpones. Leaders: Silvia Darie, Jeff Wilson, Karen Buehler

My family and I had a lovely time on our first tent camping experience! Sylvia, Jeff and Karen were incredibly hospitable with food, crafts, knowledge of camping/hiking and the community-at-large was very friendly, courteous and adventurous!

The location was good. Several different hiking trails. Love the potluck on Saturday. It saved me from packing several things since I was in a hurry.. LOL.. Overall, great experience.. I really liked the waterfall hike.. The weather didn't cooperate but I can now say I have camped in the rain! YAAAA! :)
