ERIE presents: Integrating the Sacred into the Profane with Howard Whitehouse

Join us for a presentation on Integrating the Sacred into the Profane: The conundrum in our face with Howard Whitehouse, PhD:

In this presentation, Howard will take 45 minutes to map the terrain of the shamanic ordeal presented in 2 parts

1. Preparation:

including metaphors of transformation, triggers of induction, the role of intentionality, the various ways consciousness tends to "alter", and, the context required to support the shamanic ordeal.

2. A Phenomenology of the Shamanic Ordeal:

focusing on the journey from profane to sacred realms--then returning -- and attempting to integrate the experience into ones life. This will include a map of 4 aspects of return that must be entertained.

-For the last hour we will engage the topic of expansions, inversions, shifts, collapses and transformations of consciousness, in the format of an "in-the-round" discussion with the audience.

Howard Whitehouse received his Ph.D. in East West Psychology from CIIS in 2005. His dissertation research focused on the challenges encountered when individuals return from a shamanic initiation ordeal and attempt to integrate the experience into the fabric of their lives. He was a Placement Counselor at CIIS for 5 years, co-founder of the Human Science Research Institute at the University of West Georgia, and currently an exhibiting artist and presenter.

Dr.Whitehouse had generously prepared an extensive conceptual treatment of essential principals regarding transpersonal experience and its integration process. He explored the personal as well as the social dimensions of this topic.I really appreciated his research and this opportunity to gather and share our individual responses.I am pleased that he may extend our discussions of this topic.I felt that we only scratched the surface in that people didn't really dig deep enough into the areas that are most difficult to confront and integrate.Obviously, when exploring delicate and highly personal psychological content there must first be an atmosphere of trust and support.Though we may intend to examine our personal stories, when the topic is intellectualized the transition to authentic sharing takes some time. The discussion of uncovered repressed material requires bravery and vulnerability. The extent that a group achieves this determines its collective wisdom.
