Ishmael Islam Presides
NYSEC members know Ish as an Ethical Teen Leadership advisor and actor with Ethics and the Theater. This Brooklyn native is also a poet, musician, graphic designer and filmmaker who likes “the idea of poetry becoming more accessible.” To that end, he is offering a workshop that will inspire you to get in touch with your creative energy and write your own poetry. Why “small world”? Because wherever he goes, Ish finds and makes connections with other people. Performing his poetry and offering workshops make that possible.
Ish’s workshop will focus on the process of building a poem and emphasize the writer’s choice to experiment with poetic tools. From building a freewrite into a form of a sonnet or sestina, observation of line breaks and meter to the visual effect of a poem on page, these sessions encourage an accessibility to understanding poetry through play.
Entry to our 100-year-old building and meeting rooms is available for most wheelchair users with prior arrangements. Please call ahead [masked] x 107) for setup of our portable system and plan to arrive one hour before start time.
I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
