Film Screening and Director Talk: “My Perestroika” with Robin Hessman

Director Robin Hessman will be introducing "My Perestroika" at the BU Photonics Center. FREE and OPEN TO PUBLIC. Join the BU Center for the Study of Europe for the screening and a small reception afterwards. Please follow the link for more info:

My Perestroika follows five ordinary Russians living in extraordinary times — from their sheltered Soviet childhood, to the collapse of the Soviet Union during their teenage years, to the constantly shifting political landscape of post-Soviet Russia. Together, these childhood classmates paint a complex picture of the dreams and disillusionment of those raised behind the Iron Curtain. / Robin Hessman graduated from Brown University with a dual degree in Russian and Film. She received her graduate degree in film directing from the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow (with a “red diploma” of honors). She received an Academy Award in 1994 – with co-director James Longley – for their student film, Portrait of Boy with Dog. During her eight years living in Russia, Robin worked for the Children’s Television Workshop as the on-site producer of Ulitsa Sezam, the original Russian-language Sesame Street.

I enjoyed the movie a lot. Very unique description of turbulent 90s in Russia.

Interesting film! Got good insight as to how Russians feel today as they reflect back and what was going through their heads during the Cold War and disintegration of the USSR. The filmmaker also gave us good insight about the typical citizens interviewed in the film and the changes that have happened since early 90s.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
