SUMMARY:⚡️Achieving Peak Performance for Matrix Multiplication in C++
 with Aliaksei Sala
DESCRIPTION:Cpp Bay Area: C++ Programming In and Around Silicon Valley\nMa
trix multiplication is a fundamental operation in scientific computing\, g
 ame development\, AI\, and numerous high-performance applications. While i
ts mathematical definition is simple\, achieving optimal performance in C+
+ is far from trivial.\n\nIn this talk\, we will explore different optimiz
ation techniques for matrix multiplication\, from naive implementations to
highly tuned versions leveraging modern hardware features. We will cover
key performance-enhancing strategies such as loop unrolling\, cache blocki
ng\, SIMD vectorization\, parallelization using threads and more. Through
benchmarking and profiling\, we will measure the real impact of these opti
mizations.\n\nBy the end of this session\, attendees will gain insights in
to two critical questions:\nHow hard is it to implement an optimized matri
x multiplication in C++?\nHow effective is C++ for achieving peak performa
nce in this task?\n\nThis talk is suitable for developers interested in pe
rformance optimization\, computational efficiency\, and modern C++ techniq
 ues for numerical computing.\n\n++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: LevelDB! An evening of discussions and brief talks.
DESCRIPTION:Data! SF Bay\nNOTE: This event is being postponed until August
. We will send out a note when it is back on the calendar.\n\nDavid Straus
s\, CTO of Pantheon\, will share his experiences with LevelDB\, and outlin
e his reasons for advocating it.\n\nIf you would like to share your experi
 ences as well\, send a note to data@lynnbender.com .\n\nLevelDB (https://c
 ode.google.com/p/leveldb/) (Wikipedia Page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L
evelDB)) has been around for a while. It has the same kind of compaction a
nd sorted table strategy that Cassandra does. If you’re building databas
es that store – that need to persist to flat to either rotating volumes
or flash devices\, LevelDB works well for that.\n\nLevelDB scales all the
way from an Android device that is maintaining persistent data for applica
tion and needs low memory and is writing flash memory on the local device
all the way up to server applications that are running on either kind of c
ommercial flash drives or possibly RAID arrays of rotating magnetic media.
\n\nBut what's new?\n\nLevelDB now has a project offering network accessib
ility and replication. Performance is in the ballpark of Redis\, which is
impressive considering that LevelDB actually promises durability.\n\nhttps
 ://github.com/ideawu/ssdb\n\nRiak also supports (http://docs.basho.com/ria
 k/latest/tutorials/choosing-a-backend/LevelDB/) LevelDB (http://docs.basho
 .com/riak/latest/tutorials/choosing-a-backend/LevelDB/) for storage.\n\nTh
ere's also now a new\, rich Python API for LevelDB:\nhttps://github.com/wb
olster/plyvel\n\nWhat else is new? Come share what you know.

SUMMARY:Presentation: Jeff Johnson and Austin Henderson\, "Conceptual Mode
 ls"
DESCRIPTION:Cpp Bay Area: C++ Programming In and Around Silicon Valley\nCo
nceptual Models: Core to Good Design\n\nThe most important step in designi
ng a user interface for a desktop or web-based application is to design a
coherent\, task-focused conceptual model. Unfortunately\, this step is oft
en skipped in software development. The result is incoherent\, arbitrary\,
overly-complex applications that expose irrelevant concepts to users. Thi
s talk explains what conceptual models are\, why they are valuable\, and h
ow to create them. It is based on a recent book of the same title by Jeff
Johnson and Austin Henderson.\n\nJeff Johnson is Principal Consultant at U
 I Wizards\, Inc.\, a product usability consultancy (uiwizards.com). He als
o is a principal at WiserUsability.com\, a consultancy focused on elder us
ability and accessibility. After earning B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale
and Stanford Universities\, he worked as a UI designer and implementer\, e
 ngineer manager\, usability tester\, and researcher at Cromemco\, Xerox\,
US West\, Hewlett-Packard Labs\, and Sun Microsystems. He has taught at St
anford University\, Mills College\, and the University of Canterbury. He h
as authored many articles and chapters on Human-Computer Interaction\, as
well as the books GUI Bloopers\, Web Bloopers\, GUI Bloopers 2.0\, and Des
igning with the Mind in Mind. His latest book\, coauthored with Austin Hen
derson\, is Conceptual Models: Core to Good Design (2011).\n\nAustin Hende
rson's 45-year career in Human-Computer Interaction includes user interfac
e research and architecture at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory\, Bolt Beranek and
Newman\, Xerox Research (both PARC and EuroPARC)\, Apple Computer\, and P
itney Bowes\, as well as strategic industrial design with Fitch and his ow
n Rivendel Consulting & Design. The primary goal of his work has been to b
etter meet user needs\, both by improving system development to better ant
icipate those needs\, and by broadening system capability to enable users
themselves to better respond to unanticipated needs when they arise in a r
 ich and changing world.

SUMMARY:H.265: High Efficiency Video Encoding and Building Your Own GPU Co
 mpilers
DESCRIPTION:PipelineAI Advanced Spark and TensorFlow Meetup SF South Bay\n
 Agenda:\n\nGeneral Discussion:\n\n6:15-7:00pm: What’s new and first-time
  attendee intros\n\nMain Program:\n\n7:00-7:45pm: H.265: High Efficiency V
ideo Encoding (Tom Vaughan\, MulticoreWare\, Inc)\n\n7:55-8:30 pm: Buildin
g Your Own GPU Compilers with libNVVM\n\n(Dr Yuan Lin\, Senior Engineer\,
NVIDIA)\n\nRefreshments sponsored by Acceleware!\n\nH.265: High Efficiency
Video Encoding\n\nHigh Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is a recently ratif
ied standard for video compression. While HEVC (H.265) can encode video at
30% to 50% lower bit rates than AVC (H.264) at equivalent quality levels\
, this greater encoding efficiency comes at the cost of greater computatio
nal complexity. MulticoreWare is developing a high performance implementat
ion of HEVC\, leveraging parallel computing and GPU computing wherever pos
sible.\n\nSpeaker: Tom Vaughan\n\nTom is the VP of Business Development fo
r MulticoreWare\, a leader in heterogeneous computing tools\, libraries an
d services. Before joining MulticoreWare\, Tom was VP of Products at WinZi
p\, where he was responsible for product strategy and marketing for one of
the most popular software applications of all time\, with more than 100 m
illion active users. Prior to WinZip\, Tom was Director of Business Develo
pment at Cyberlink\, responsible for US marketing\, strategic relationship
s\, and new business development.\n\nTom started his career as a Mastering
Engineer with CBS Records\, where he managed mastering operations in one
of the first CD manufacturing facilities in the US. Tom holds a B.S. in Co
mputer Engineering and an M.B.A. from Drexel University.\n\nBuilding Your
Own GPU Compilers with libNVVM\n\nThe upcoming CUDA 5.5 release will inclu
de libNVVM\, an LLVM-based solution that makes targeting GPUs from high le
vel languages easier. This talk gives an overview of libNVVM\, NVVM IR\, l
ibdevice and other related components. We will also walk through several e
xamples showing how to translate generic LLVM IR code to target NVIDIA GPU
 s. Compiler and/or language developers targeting NVIDIA GPUs and are new t
o libNVVM will find this presentation useful\, so will anyone who just wan
ts to take a peek of what’s under nvcc.\n\nSpeaker: Dr Yuan Lin\n\nYuan
Lin is a senior engineer and manages the code generation team at NVIDIA. H
is team's responsibilities include PTX code generation\, tool and platform
support. Yuan has been at NVIDIA for 4 years. He was at Sun Microsystems
and Motorola before that. He holds a doctorate in computer science from Un
iversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.\n\nLocation:\n\nOpen Space\;\nCa

SUMMARY:Come hear from Ben Shneiderman - University of Maryland
DESCRIPTION:Big Data Analytics: Mobile\, Social and Web\nhttp://photos3.me
 etupstatic.com/photos/event/7/0/8/2/event_221308802.jpeg\n\nSPEAKER: Ben S
hneiderman - University of Maryland\, College Park\n\nWe are very excited
that the fourteenth distinguished speaker in this series will be Ben Shnei
derman. Doors open at 6:30pm\, talk begins at 7:00pm. Drinks and light foo
d provided.\n\nTITLE: Information Visualization for Knowledge Discovery: T
urning Messy BigData into Actionable SmallData\n\nABSTRACT: Interactive in
formation visualization tools provide researchers with remarkable capabili
ties to support discovery. These telescopes for high-dimensional BigData c
ombine powerful statistical methods with user-controlled interfaces. Users
can begin with an overview\, zoom in on areas of interest\, filter out un
wanted items\, and then click for details-on-demand. With careful design a
nd efficient algorithms\, the dynamic queries approach to data exploration
can provide 100msec updates even for million-item visualizations that can
represent billion-record databases.\n\nThis talk reviews the growing comm
ercial success stories such as www.spotfire.com (https://exchange.cs.umd.e
 du/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.spotfire.com)\, and www.smartmoney
 .com/marketmap (https://exchange.cs.umd.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http
://www.smartmoney.com/marketmap)\, plus emerging products such as www.hive
 group.com (https://exchange.cs.umd.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://ww
w.hivegroup.com) will be covered.\n\nThe central theme is the integration
of statistics with visualization as applied for time series data such as (
 www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/timesearcher (https://exchange.cs.umd.edu/exchweb/bin/
 redir.asp?URL=http://www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/timesearcher) )\, temporal event
sequences such as electronic health records ( http://www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/l
 ifelines2 and www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/eventflow)\, and social network data ( h
 ttp://www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/socialaction and http://www.codeplex.com/nodexl
). The result is meaningful SmallData that supports bold decisions.\nBio:
BEN SHNEIDERMAN ( http://www.cs.umd.edu/~ben ) is a Professor in the Depar
tment of Computer Science and Founding Director (1983-2000) of the Human-C
omputer Interaction Laboratory ( http://www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/ ) at the Univ
ersity of Maryland. He is a Fellow of the AAAS\, ACM\, and IEEE\, and a Me
mber of the National Academy of Engineering\, in recognition of his pionee
ring contributions to human-computer interaction and information visualiza
tion.\n\nBen is the co-author with Catherine Plaisant of Designing the Use
 r Interface: Strategies for Effective Human-Computer Interaction (5th ed.\
, 2010) http://www.awl.com/DTUI/. With Stu Card and Jock Mackinlay\, he co
-authored Readings in Information Visualization: Using Vision to Think (19
99). His book Leonardo’s Laptop appeared in October 2002 (MIT Press) and
won the IEEE book award for Distinguished Literary Contribution. His late
st book\, with Derek Hansen and Marc Smith\, is Analyzing Social Media Net
 works with NodeXL ( http://www.codeplex.com/nodexl \, 2010).

SUMMARY:Druid Exposed: what makes Druid real-time
DESCRIPTION:Apache Druid® San Francisco\nAs with our last Meetup\, we oft
en get the question\, "Many other databases say they are real-time\; what
makes Druid a real-time database and how is it differentiated against so m
any other databases."\n\nWe thought we'd dedicate this next Druid Meetup t
o detail Druid's real-time ingestion and query capability (from architectu
re to practical implementation). To make things more interactive\, bring y
our own laptop and follow along by creating your own Druid demo environmen
t on AWS. We plan on providing simple examples that will allow you to inge
st and query information as it hits the database.\n\nWho should attend? An
ybody who is interested in providing insight against live streaming data o
r\, as we call it\, "data of the moment."\n\nWe'll start at 5:30 pm with P
izza\; the presentation will begin promptly at 6:00 pm. Just in case you'r
e wondering\, the RSVP will be managed manually - we have members joining
us from other groups. When you arrive\, please let reception know you're h
eaded for Metamarkets\, Suite 230.\n\nWe look forward to seeing you soon!\

SUMMARY:Introduction to Recommendation Engines
DESCRIPTION:Big Data Gods\nPlease note that we are moving our venue to 320
0 Coronado Drive\, Santa Clara\, CA. I apologize for the change in the dat
e as well. We had to do this to accommodate a larger audience and also to
give enough time for more members to RSVP (a few of the members are gone t
his week to attend various conferences and events).\n\nAgenda\n\n---------
 \n\n06:30 pm - 07:00 pm : Networking over Dinner\n\n07:00 pm - 07:30 pm :
Introduction to Recommend engines (talk)\n\n07:30 pm - 08:00 pm : Form gro
ups and work in groups\n\n08:00 pm - 08:30 pm : Group sessions and Q/A\n\n
As mentioned in our first meetup\, we will be kicking off our first sprint
. In this sprint\, we will be studying an implementing Recommendation Engi
ne algorithms. We will start with Collaborative Filtering and then slowly
expand in to other algorithms as well.\n\nWe will also be using MongoDB an
d build a complete recommendation engine using Ruby and a presentation lay
er using Ruby-on-Rails. There will be four sprints before teams demo their
recommendation engines.\n\nIn this meetup\, we will have an introductory
session about Recommend engines and then form teams of people to work on r
ecommend engines over the next month (there will be weekly sessions). Come
along for a wonderful journey in to big data\, analytics and machine lear
 ning.

SUMMARY:First Intro Hackathon!
DESCRIPTION:Analytics Hackathon\nSince this is the first Hackathon for the
organization\, I intend for this meetup to initially be a social meet and
greet. I will chat for a few minutes\, but my end goal is to have Hackath
ons that really help everyone focus on areas and skill sets that they want
to develop. I also want the group to be a valuable resource long term for
anyone that has a cool project or just wants to learn stuff about analyti
cs. Hence\, please come with a good energy and eagerness to talk about ana
lytics work/projects you are interested in and what you want to learn/do w
ithin the organization. Future meetups will have member driven themes and
workshops. I also intend to have competitions\, prizes\, and organization
supported open sourced projects.\n\nWhether you are a seasoned developer\,
student\, corporate bigwig\, or just someone that wants to learn about an
alytics\, we will have a place for you in a fun\, friendly\, and creative
environment.\n\nNote 1: When I am not working on grad school stuff\, my ot
her gig is in Farmer's Markets. So\, this group will maintain good munchie
s and booze until I die.\n\nNote 2: The space we have at the Port Offices
is AWESOME. We are scheduled to meet at their original location(and we are
STILL meeting there). They are just finishing up their second space at 10
1 Broadway (around the corner) and it is a tech hub/coworking space that r
ivals any in the Bay. It has a presentation room\, game room\, bar/kitchen
\, and a slide (yes\, a SLIDE)! It is the perfect space for a creative hac
kathon. Our meetup is timed with their new location launch and they have b
een really friendly to us. There is a parking garage around the corner. It
is also very bike friendly.\n\nBasic Agenda:\n\nPlease donate $5 at the d
 oor\n\n7 p.m. - Start showing up and meeting other members\n\n745 p.m. - I
ntro to Analytics Hackathon\n\n8 p.m. - Member roundtable discussions - He
 lp define the group!\n\n830 p.m. - Hack/do presentations until they kick u
s out! (probably midnight) : )\n\nIf you have anything you want to present
or mention before the first meetup\, please email me at Charles.twitchell
