Steppenwolf (Herman Hesse)

Another freestyle discussion for anyone who likes to hear and talk about the existentialist viewpoint.  This one concentrates on Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse.  I've started reading this already... there's plenty of time to get hold of it but start early as it's a bit longer than other recent books we've discussed.

Read the book if you can, but if you don't get round to it feel free to come along anyway.  Discussion usually meanders towards general existentialist themes.

Thanks for a good meetup and all the good perspectives. As well as varied reactions to Steppenwolf, some interesting references cropped up to look into, I'll just list them here for future reference. Anita Brookner, Sophie's World, Steppenwolf (the movie - not very good apparently, available on YouTube at the moment), Jeanette Winterson, "Why be happy when you can be normal?", The Change (movie). The relationship of determinism and free will also came up again - it's a theme to discuss further when we get a chance!

I'm not sure I'll be able to make it on Sunday because I'm working, but please let me know which book you'll be looking at next time. I might pop in if I finish early!

Don't know much about Existentialism, but have an interest in philosophy.
