The French Connection at the Castro Theater
Winner of five Oscars in 1971, this realistic portrayal of two NYPD narcotics detectives on the trail of heroin smugglers was shot almost entirely on location. It covers New York in rich detail, from fancy Upper-East Side restaurants to waterfront bars, Brooklyn candy stores to Manhattan subway stations, with a car chase scene beneath an elevated subway line that is every bit as thrilling as the fabled San Francisco car chase in Bullitt. Rarely shown on the big screen, this is an opportunity to see it at a 1920s movie palace reminiscent of the grand New York movie houses.
We'll meet in front of the theater at 6:40 p.m. If you arrive after we've gone inside (and before the film starts) you can call me on my cell phone ([masked]) and I?ll tell you where we're seated.
After the film (approximately 8:45 p.m.) we'll repair to Escape From New York Pizza (located a block away at 508 Castro Street off 18th Street) which does one of the best imitations of NY pizza in San Francisco.
