This event is being organized by San Francisco Ex-New Yorker member Leesa Raab, who has arranged for the game to be a fundraiser for Team in Training (teamintraining.org) . For each $18 reserved infield ticket purchased, $7 of the proceeds will go back to Team in Training --which ultimately goes to support The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. So this is a great way to go out for a fun day at the ball park to root for a New York team in the company of fellow ex-New Yorkers, all while supporting a great cause. Leesa Raab will purchase tickets on behalf of the group in order to make sure the seats are together. In order to reserve a ticket, send $18 for each ticket you want to purchase to Leesa's paypal account by May 14th. Go to paypal.com and sign up for an account, then click to send money--from there search for Leesa Raab by entering her email address, lmraab@gmail.com and entering in the price amount. Feel free to contact Leesa directly with questions, lmraab@gmail.com.

Writer and actor Chazz Palminteri's one-man show, A Bronx Tale, opens in San Francisco on Sept. 23. To celebrate Palminteri's arrival in San Francisco the Castro Theatre will be screening Bullets Over Broadway, written and directed by Woody Allen which scored Palminteri an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 1995. After the screening there will be a Question & Answer session with Chazz Palminteri and there will also be an opportunity for audience members to win tickets to see A BRONX TALE live on stage. The movie starts at 7:00 p.m. We'll meet at 6:00 p.m. at Escape from New York Pizza, a block away, for a quick bite. I'll be in front of the theater at 6:50 p.m. if you come for the film only. Sorry for the last-minute notice. I just realized this might be a fun Meetup. A BRONX TALE was first mounted off Broadway in 1989 and helped establish Palminteri as a writer and actor with a distinct voice. In A BRONX TALE, Palminteri brings 18 characters to vivid life, depicting a rough childhood on Bronx streets populated by a cast of friends and enemies. For more information on the show, visit www.shnsf.com.

They say you can't get a decent pastrami sandwich in the SF Bay Area (and they may be right), but let's tamp down our New York food standards and approach this outing with open minds (and mouths). Some folks say Saul's is the closest thing you'll find hereabouts to a N.Y. delicatessen. Let's find out. At best, we will revel in the joy of devouring fine smoked meats dressed with exquisite mustard (or, for the vegetarians, pickles, cole slaw and potato latkes). At worst, we can share knowing complaints about how poorly the food compares to our favorite NY eatery. Remember, as Murray Burns said in A Thousand Clowns, People fall into two distinct categories; people who like delicatessen, and people who don't like delicatessen. A man who is not touched by the earthy lyricism of hot pastrami, the pungent fantasy of corned-beef, pickles, frankfurters, the great lusty impertinence of good mustard -- is a man of stone and without heart.

For my inaugural meeting as organizer, we'll go back to a popular meeting place from the past, the funky, historic Tommy's Joynt, an old steam-table restaurant/bar evocative of (but of course not as good as) similar institutions in New York, where you can choose from over 100 brands of beer to wash down your corned beef, buffalo stew or (for you vegetarians) pasta and vegetables. This will be a chance for us to get to know (or become re-acquainted with) one another over beer and smoked meats. Bring your estimation of the biggest difference between New Yorkers and Californians, what you miss most, a list of your favorite films set-in-New York and ideas for future meetups.

Someone asked for ex-New Yorkers to get together to watch the Super Bowl. You ask, we deliver. Instead of fighting crowds at the usual jammed sports bars, I happen to know of a bar, recently opened, that will definitely surprise me if it's anything close to crowded. In Ghirardelli Square (a tourist spot during non-tourist season), newly opened, so no one knows about it yet, a bit out of the way (right on the waterfront, with beautiful facing views of Alcatraz and Aquatic Park). It's big, it's clean, still has that new restaurant smell, and did I say it shouldn't be too crowded? It's O'Neill's Irish Pub, on Beach Street, between Polk and Larkin. Here's a map: http://tinyurl.com/2 hcjts It's accessible by the 19 Polk Bus, the last stop right on the water. I'm not married to this site, if you know of a better place, let me know. Plus, if we don't get a decent critical mass by Friday, and we're talking about quite a bit more than ten responses, considering all the recent flaking, we'll scrap this event. Show some New York pride! There's other pride events throughout the year, but this is the one for us New Yorkers. Kickoff is estimated at 3:18 pm PST. We ask for one dollar to go towards fees for this site, nothing goes in our pockets.

Who knows more than New Yorkers? Apparently, very few. In our first official foray into the trivial, the Ex-New Yorkers defeated all comers, and much fun was had by all. In subsequent, unofficial competitions, we've either won or taken the Best Small Team prizes. Come on out for our second official event. It's a great way to meet your fellow homies around some drinks, eats, and interesting questions. Show up early if you like to get settled in, have a bite or a drink, and meet your fellow New Yorkers before the contest begins. Free to play, we're just asking for $1 to defray the costs of having a site on Meetup. Just two blocks from Muni and Bart, and plenty of local parking. No trivia acumen necessary, but if you breathe through your mouth and don't know the difference between Barack Obama and Osama Bin Laden... Also look out for a hike in early March, tentatively March 2nd, around the Ocean Beach/Lands End/Sutro Bath area.

Let's gather to share one of the quintessential New York experiences, eating in a Chinese restaurant. Granted, little if anything in the way of Chinese food can compare favorably with what we?d find back in New York, but Yuet Lee has outstanding seafood (both Calvin Trillin and I rate its salt and pepper squid as the best we?ve ever had). Plus, it's on a street with a familiar New York name and it stays open till 3:00 a.m. (no wimpy California cuisine hours for this place). They have big round tables that are great for sharing lots of dishes. Over the food, we can talk about how much we miss the New York winters and plan for our next triumph at Trivia Night on January 22. After dinner, perhaps we'll wander through a few Chinatown alleys and see how they compare with Pell Street. The 30 Stockton bus stops across the street, but it's only a 15 to 20 minute walk from Market Street if you take BART. If you drive and can't find street parking, there are two city-owned parking garages one block away on Vallejo St. between Stockton and Powell Streets. If you get lost, you can call me on my cell phone: 415-519-9684. Jayson

Let's get together to socialize with ex-New Yorkers and show others how smart we think we are. I host pub trivia competitions around the city during the week, and the braintrust that organizes this ex-New Yorker group thought this would be a good event, since NYC is the center of the universe, and we know it all. We'll gather for drinks, food, and conversation, and then form up in a team(s) to trounce the non-New Yorkers. It's FREE to play, just pay for whatever you consume, plus there are also prizes for the best teams. Competition begins at 7:30 or so, but get there as early as 6:30 to grab a bite, meet with others in the group, and gripe about the California food, flakers, and general lifestyle. We'll play as a team against the other teams that are there that evening. Six rounds of trivia on all sorts of topics that lasts just about two hours. If you can't stay the whole time, stay as long as you like. If the team gets too big (+10), we'll split into two teams. Even if you're not a trivia whiz, don't worry; there will be plenty of opportunities to socialize with your team between questions or each round. Guaranteed fun or your money back! I won't be playing, since I'm hosting the event, but it's always good to know the quizmaster, if you know what I mean, and I think you do. Look for Karen's "I Love NY" sign, or just find me and I'll direct you to the team. Close to downtown, just blocks from the Powell Street BART/Muni station, with plenty of street parking. Flaking is frowned upon, so sign up like you mean it. Here's the quiz site page: http://www.brainstor mer.com/venueDisplay .aspx?venueID=39& state=ca Cheers, and we hope to see you Tuesday, October 23rd. Stan, Assistant Organizer

The French Connection at the Castro Theater Winner of five Oscars in 1971, this realistic portrayal of two NYPD narcotics detectives on the trail of heroin smugglers was shot almost entirely on location. It covers New York in rich detail, from fancy Upper-East Side restaurants to waterfront bars, Brooklyn candy stores to Manhattan subway stations, with a car chase scene beneath an elevated subway line that is every bit as thrilling as the fabled San Francisco car chase in Bullitt. Rarely shown on the big screen, this is an opportunity to see it at a 1920s movie palace reminiscent of the grand New York movie houses. We'll meet in front of the theater at 6:40 p.m. If you arrive after we've gone inside (and before the film starts) you can call me on my cell phone (415-519-9684) and I?ll tell you where we're seated. After the film (approximately 8:45 p.m.) we'll repair to Escape From New York Pizza (located a block away at 508 Castro Street off 18th Street) which does one of the best imitations of NY pizza in San Francisco. Update!: If you can't find us (Look for the "I New York" sign), you can call our assistant organizer, Stan, at 415-310-4240, to locate our group. Please don't abuse this number with freaky calls, unless they're really sexy. Hi Everyone, Reminder about Annie Hall on Saturday I think a few of us are going to try to get there around 6 to get some spots and order take out from Max's. There are going to be some chairs set up (and they ask you NOT to bring your own which blocks visibilty). You can still come at 7:45, but the earlier you get there, the better off we will be in terms of space. If we get a set of chairs, great, if not, I will bring some paper (and Jayson says he has a tarp...) I think we will figure it out. I will have an I HEART NYC sign (you know, the one with the red heart) so you can find us. I think the take out option is the best, as we won't lose our area, and we don't have to leave people back to hold it. Here is a link to Max's menu (it tries to be a new york style place, and it is pretty good, I think), I would like to place the order around 6:30, which should be ready around 7pm. If you are later, you can always place another order or bring other food, or eat elsewhere, of course. http://www.maxsworld .com/maxs/map.php?id =16 There are always a lot of people who come who don't RSVP, but if you think you are going to come or you are a maybe PLEASE RSVP, it will help us know how much space to try to save. The best idea is to get there early, that way we aren't taking up a huge area we never fill. That would be bad. See you all Saturday! best, Karen (oh, yeah someone asked about the event fee, that is because meet up charges me $15 a month to use this service)
