My parents were both born in Germany and moved to the US after they were married. I am interested in getting an EU passport.

Has anyone been through that process?

Any advice?

Dear German-Speaking Community in New York City,

It?s time for another update on the German Immersion Preschool / Kindergarten in Manhattan.  There are two big pieces of news to share.  Firstly, Friends of the German American School of New York will now be working more closely with Deutsches Haus at NYU and the Goethe-Institut New York to bring this project to fruition.   Both organizations will be providing invaluable assistance in the area of curriculum development, promotion and fundraising.  We are very excited to be partnering with these two important organizations in the NYC German-speaking cultural community.

The second news to share is that we are changing our business model.  Here are elements of the new plan:

1)      We will be opening 3 to 4 smaller preschools around Manhattan (15 to 20 children per school depending on facility size restraints)

2)      School will be for ages 18 months to 5 years

3)      School will have extended hours available (8am to 6pm)

4)      School will be German immersion

5)      Curriculum is being developed by our committee and will have aspects of traditional German curriculum as well as best practices from other methodologies

6)      First school opening date tentatively scheduled for September 2011.

Now is the time for you to get involved.  If you feel like there is a large enough demand in your neighborhood for one of these smaller preschools, consider forming and leading a neighborhood committee.  The Friends of the German American School of New York, Inc. is busy fundraising for this project, and the first location is going to depend a lot on which neighborhood (Upper West Side, Upper East Side, Chelsea, Midtown, Battery Park, Downtown, etc. etc.) has the most interest and active parents!

If you are interested in being one of these neighborhood coordinators, please get in touch with me right away.  Some of the responsibilities of a neighborhood coordinator would be:

1)      Assist with school facility location and selection

2)      Organize and communicate with interested parents

3)      Local fundraising activities

4)      Liaise with Friends of the German American School of New York, Inc.

We are very excited for the future and over the next few months will be communicating about some upcoming fundraisers for the school project.  Consider giving your time and or money to this project (all donations are tax-deductible).  And as always, tell everyone you know who might be interested about the school project.  Have them get in touch with me so I can put them on the mailing list.

And again, get involved.  Now is the time to hear from the neighborhoods!  Get in touch with me if you want to be a coordinator.  There is much to do, the first of which is to decide our first location.  That depends on you!

I look forward to hearing from each and every one of you.

Herzliche Gruesse,

Lauren
