Learning Russian for kids in Andover Public Library

Privet vsem,

Eto predvaritemyi etap pered tem kak nachnutsa zaniatiya.  Please come with the specific requests and ideas so it is easier  to create a specific program/curriculum for our children. Also we will most likely have rhyme time in Russian and learn about one Russian letter and number.

It was very nice to get together with other Russian speaking families. I think parents and kids both enjoyed it.

Is there an age range for this group? Geared to 3-5 years or for kids in school already (6+ years)?

    Dear All,

I would like to resurrect the idea of learning Russian for kids. If someone in Andover/North Andover area can arrange a spot (either the library or someone's house or any other alternative) I would be happy to volunteer to teach the classes. I am also trying to get the group going in Reading on teaching kids to read in Russian. If Andover/North Andover location would be more convenient for most, I would be happy to teach in Andover or we can keep those 2 groups separate. I would like to start after the New Years. Please share your ideas.

I do hope that we can finally lift this project off the ground :)

OK, guys so we have the permission to do that. Now we have to just set up a date to meet. Since the busy holiday season starts, it should be somewhere in January. On Fridays they have around the world in 30 minutes where there are songs in various languages which is cool. So now for the Russian program meetup we will have to set up a date. I would say a middle of January so everyone is back from the vacations and so on. Most of my material is for birth - to 3 year old. So if anyone wants to do anything for the older children you are more than welcome.

Laura, I think I have created the confusion - since there were no news for a while about this group I wrote to folks telling them that I would volunteer to teach at the group if some one can confirm the location. Looking at the ages of kids who signed up, I was thinking about the program for older kids 3+ and most of the parents who I talked to said that they could not meet on weekdays, only on the weekends since most parents work and kids go to school. I think we should split the group announcement in order to avoid confusion. I know Ilona was trying to figure out if we can use Andover library on the weekends - do you have a connection there that we can check with or should we just continue to call Children's Room and talk to them?

    Jim,
Glad that you are considering joining! Looking forward to meeting your daughter. At the moment we are still trying to work out the logistics of the classes. One of our members is contacting Andover library to find out if it's a possibility to hold classes there. I am also putting a group together in Reading to teach kids to read in Russian and to read and discuss stories. At this point, there is no fee for the group - I am just trying to encourange my son to learn and speak Russian and would love it if other kids could join so we can create a community of Russian kids and families for our kids to practice and learn Russian. Sundays seem to be the day that works best for most families, hopefully, it will work for you as well. If the group takes off, I might be asking for a very small donation towards the supplies, but there is no fee. I will keep you posted when we know for sure where and when we can start the group.

    Hope you can join!

    Irina

Sunday would work for us, too, especially if in the morning (but not toooo early) This sounds perfect! And yeah, we'd definitely kick in for some supplies and maybe we could all do a snack/juice rotor (kids always seem to be encouraged by the presence of snacks). Thanks for leading on this. Andover works for us (We are in Acton.) If the Library doesn't work out and we decided to rotate using folk's houses I might host a small/medium sized group every so often (if Acton isn't bad.)

Since adopting our daughter From Birobidzhan a year ago she has lost the ability to speak Russian, though she still understands a *little* (her piano teacher only speaks to her tolka po-Russkie, and her dentists speak both English and Russian to her to be sure she is understanding). We were thinking of enrolling her in classes (Lexington- AlmMater, or Framingham- St Johns) to keep her Russian skills. But if you include older children (she is age 7 now) and do it on non-school days (Saturday mornings?) and the cost is minimal (sadly, another consideration we've had to include) we'd love to know!

Ok great to see that we are ready to learn. I am working on the schedule at the library and trying to catch the director of children's room but because i work during a day it is hard. I wll email her tomorrow and see if the email is going to be effective. If not i may habe to transfer the class to stevens memorial library .
