Photo Walkabout / Consumnes & Sandhill Cranes

Bring along your longest lenses and we'll look for sandhill cranes with the late afternoon sun as our backdrop. We will meet at the Consumnes River Preserve parking lot where we will start our watch for the sandhill cranes. We'll also have the option to visit another location on W. Woodbridge Rd.

If you are new to using long lenses or need a refresher on photographing wildlife, bring your questions and we will have a discussion in the parking lot at Consumnes.

GEAR: Telephoto lenses (wide angles for landscapes if you want), tripods, monopods.

Time for a Walkabout! So for those of you who have a weekday to goof off, here's a little incentive to get out there and practice your photographic skills. Every four weeks or so, we do a Photo Walkabout and visit a different location every month. Here's how it works... when you RSVP (and you must RSVP in order to vote and get the updates), you will submit an idea on where you might like to go and shoot for that month. Everyone will have a chance to vote on the submitted ideas via email. Then, after the voting closes, the TIME and LOCATION will be posted. It will be posted a few days before the meetup so that you all will know ahead of time where we will be going. Plan to have lunch with us and talk shop. The weather or the season could even dictate what we want to shoot. Either way, the plan shouldn't take us farther than an hour or so away in any given direction. Remember, this will repeat about every four weeks, so if you can't make it to one, do the next one! Remember, time and location to be determined!(10:00 a.m. is just a default setting). Sound interesting? Come along and find out!

I've enjoyed seeing the photo's from yesterday's trip and am so sad that I missed it.

It was a very nice day and a beautiful sunset. The cranes must have decided to sleep somewhere else.

This was my first Walkabout. I was at Consumnes Preserve from 2:10 'til after 5 and walked every trail. I asked at least 10 photographers if they were with the EP group. Not a one! Is there a secret handshake I have to learn?
    Oh well, great sunset.

Hi Stephen, so sorry we missed you. There are two parking lots, and we were at the one where the Visitor's Center is located. We were there until 2:20.

Beautiful day. Some of the bird population may have sen us coming -- but we know where to go back to ambush them.

Nice weather, nice venue, and adding the Woodbridge Rd. preserve, and Staten Island Rd., to the list of places to photograph Sandhill cranes was a great idea.

Two new lenses and another accessory arrived yesterday, so I'll be there! Too bad it's all wide angle stuff.

No more waitlist, if you would like to join us tomorrow, please come!

FYI, I was by there this afternoon and there were a couple hundred Sandhills in a field on the north side of Desmond Road, between Franklin Blvd. and Bruceville Road (this is just north of the visitor's center). Some were within 100 feet of the edge of the road, perfect for 200mm lenses. Late afternoon light should be perfect for this location. I will have to try to catch up with the group as I wont be able to get there until 3pm or so.

Wifely and I were there late on Sunday and went to Staten Island. We greatly enjoyed the strong sounds of nearby birds as they "talked" to one another. We couldn't see these birds very well as they nicely blend into the landscape. Several flocks flew by while we were there. Almost missed them as they make no sound while flying.
Had a good Chinese dinner in Locke on the way home.

I changed my RSVP to no so that someone else can go. Unfortunately, I am still not fully recovered from surgery and will have to miss it. Have fun everyone - look forward to seeing the photos.

I moved from "wait list" to "no". I am however going to spend the day in Napa Valley (depending on the weather). Drove through there today on Silverado Trail and the colors are perfect, although light today wasn't the best.
