Sand Castle & Sand Sculpture Contest

This is an open-ended event so join in at a time that is convenient for you.  Enjoy a day in the sun and sand at the 48th Annual Sand Castle & Sand Sculpture Contest in Alameda.  The contest begins at 9:00 AM with judging starting at noon.  Arrive early and watch the artists in action or later in the day to photograph the final results.  Perhaps sunset would be more to your liking (8:29 PM).  The beach remains open until 10PM.  Crab Cove is also nearby which may give you some tidal opportunities.  The lowest tide appears to be around 2PM. They also have a wonderful visitor center.  This is a free event but there is a $5.00 parking fee. See the links below for more information

Yeah I was very disappointed in the level of sand artistry.

Nice to see lots of families out there together, but I was expecting more professional sculptures by all the advertisements we saw.

Beach is great, sandcastles not so great. Happy to have learned about this nice family beach.

Another comment on the website: An annual crowd-pleasing tradition at Crown is the Sand Castle and Sand Sculpture Contest, held in front of the bathhouse on a low-tide Saturday morning in June. Open to all ages, the contest attracts hundreds of participants and spectators. High tide destroys the sand creations, but winners receive trophies and ribbons as mementos of their artistry

I have never been to this event so I am unable to answer your question. If any members can respond, please do so. On the East Bay regional Park website, It indicates that it is a 2.5 mile beach with sand dunes. The beach is a great achievement of landscaping and engineering. After wind and water action had eroded the beach dangerously, it was restored in early 1982 with sand from San Francisco Bay, pumped ashore by pipeline from a barge. More sand has been added since then, and groins have been constructed to keep it in place. I can only assume it is located in the area of 8th and Otis

It appears on the map that the Beach is quite a few blocks from 8th and Otis. It also appears as the Beach is mostly rocks. I imagine they are bringing sand in for this event? Will the sculptures be on the beach or at various locations on 8th and Otis?
