AMGEN Tour 2014

This is last minute, but if you have been looking to shoot a sports event, then consider attending this: The AMGEN Tour this weekend! This will be a Self-Guided event.

The AMGEN Tour is returning to the Sacramento area on May 11th and
12th. Stage 1 of the race begins on May 11th at the State Capitol
followed by the Stage 2 time trial in Folsom on Monday, May 12th. You
can catch the action anywhere along the route you'd like. Sunday's
start time is 10:50am.  Monday's Time Trial begins at 1:05pm on Sutter
Street in Folsom. See the link below for specific route locations.
Practice your sports photography and panning techniques while
enjoying the excitement of the race.

Sac Bee: "The 2014 Amgen Tour of California will feature a
123-mile opening stage that begins in downtown Sacramento and winds
through areas of Placer and El Dorado counties before finishing at
the steps of the state Capitol".

Event Website: "As the route heads north out of the
city, it will hug the east bank of the Sacramento River. After
passing through Pleasant Grove and a Sprint in Lincoln, the racers
will head into one of the race's favorite towns...Auburn. Here the
race will contest the second sprint of Stage 1. After a fast decent
to the American River, the peloton will be confronted with a
difficult climb up Hwy 49 and the third Sprint of the day in the town
of Cool.

The riders then head south and west for a fast and flat run back
into Sacramento. Once the race passes back through the start/finish
line and what is sure to be a large and loud crowd, the race leaders
will see three laps to go. The circuit finish in Sacramento has
delivered some of the most thrilling finishes in the race's history.
This year will be no different. The winner of this stage will be on
his own in the defense of the yellow jersey at the time trial on
Stage 2."

I decided to go in the afternoon to catch the final 3 laps around the capitol. I staked out a spot at 9th and N and did some pan shots as the riders rounded the curve.

Too pooped from 2 days of hiking to get up and out tomorrow morning. Maybe I'll try to get to an afternoon portion of it.

The software is not allowing me to change my RSVP to "No". I will not be there.

go to this link for a route map:

    click on "STAGE 1 MAP"...

it looks like at Garden Highway and I-5 they should be facing the sun at that time of day...going further out Garden Highway there should be several spots for good shots!
