Aquarium of the Pacific - Photographers' Night

This is a special annual event which is strictly for photographers. You are allowed to bring tripods, flashes, soft boxes, and much more. Please see their web site (http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/events/info/photographers_night/) for ticket info and details. There is a cost of $24.95 per person ($18.95 if you are a member). There are two different admission times; I opted for the 5:30pm. This may sell out fast so get your tix soon if you want to go. Hope you can join me!

I'm having trouble with aspect ratio...I want 11x14 prints for the monthly critique, but, some of my pix only work into an 8x12 print so it doesn't get chopped/cropped...sooo frustrated & forget trying to find a pre-cut mat & custom is about $30 @ Michael's...been at this for awhile now :(

Linda, this is a common problem for some members; when you want to use a stock matte, cropping for it screws it up. If you want to maintain your image "the way it's supposed to be" then you either cut your own or pay through the nose for a custom one... this is why you can submit "digital only" for the critiques if you want (see Submission Guidelines on our web site). Just a suggestion :-). Also, FYI, we sell I think 4 different sizes of mattes for very cheap at the meetings which can be re-used. Hope this helps!

Hi Monica, ok thanks soo much! I may try just digital, will see...also, a lot of my pix would need a black mat (concert shots), but I will keep on trying! I am sooo loving this group!

Definitely a challenge to shoot - those little clownfish and seahorses just won't pose, whereas everyone seemed to have better luck with the jellyfish - even tho in motion, the jellies were in slomo. The lighting posed challenges too, but it was a lot of fun trying. Great to see some familiar faces (I promise, Monica and Carla, I WILL get your names straight).

grrrrrr pix/shutter speed is always my prob whether it's live band photography or silly little clown fish speeding around the tank! Agreed Monica, learned a lot about the inside of my camera too!

I was so glad that the event wasn't over-sold and there was easy access to all of the exhibits. Definitely challenging, most of all since I realized this morning that I had turned off image stabilization since I had planned to use my tripod... but didn't. Learned a lot shooting on manual focus and high ISO.

I thought it was great and a real challenge. As expected the lighting was very low so I had to compensate with pretty hefty ISOs which resulted in noise. I am a novice so I thought it was a good experience to see how low light conditions affect things and tricks to compensate. No National Geographic worthy pics but I did learn a lot. Thank you.

    Hi Everyone,
Hope you all had a great time! Sorry it didn't work out to meet a lot of you. Please share how you liked the event. I am anxious to hear how everyone did shooting. Personally, it was a challenge for me to shoot there. I am not thrilled with my pix but I definitely learned a lot more about my equipment :-) I will post a few pix soon and encourage you to do the same!
    Best,
    Monica

    Hi Rebecca,
There are some exhibits outside (sharks, sea lions...some others I can't remember) but I don't know if they will be open at night. You may want to call the aquarium and see if they know. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

Signed up for 630! I've never been here, are there outdoor exhibits and how do you think they will be for shooting by the time 7-ish rolls around? Bummed I couldn't get the earlier one.

Hi Connie, I am sorry that nobody has responded to you. It might help if you were willing to carpool from the valley instead. I would offer to carpool but I have an engagement that I have to go to before the aquarium.

    Can anyone carpool from valencia?

I just wanted to remind everyone that you need to purchase your tickets for this event. It may sell out and just because you have RSVP'd here, doesn't mean you are guaranteed a spot. Visit http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/events/info/photographers_night/ for tickets.
