Cheryl, Crystal keeps asking me what time you need me at Cheryl's house Sat AM. Also, I need her address as I've only been there once & it was at night for her party.

    May 15, 2014

    • Cheryl L.

Sorry Charlee I intended to send you an email. Will send it now.

Part II: I realize we all have different tastes, but I think I'd like to approach the wineries, trying what they are most known for, disregarding what I think I like/don't like... :) Also, I am going to try to be very careful about my wine tastings and will be more than glad to share tastings, as Cheryl suggested. I don't want to taste a bunch of so so wines and not be able to enjoy some better ones we might encounter later. Also, I am a bit worried about wine, mountains, and my car sickness...but I had my doctor prescribe my patches...so hopefully, that will help. Anyway want to enjoy but not overdo or get sick..So, trying to make wise decisions in advance. :)

I forgot about ginger, I've used them on cruises too. And we gave them to my girls when they were little and had rumbly tumbly's.

      1 · May 14, 2014

    • charlee c.

Yes, they work great as they had a bowl of them when we went out on the ocean in Hawaii to see the whales. For some reason, I've never had motion sickness even on cruises, but this was a small boat, so I did take them on the advice of the captain--glad I did as the whales make huge waves.

Also, could we perhaps make a list of the wines these wineries are most known for (if you run across info)? Seems I've been reading about sparkling wines a lot. Read that the only reasonably priced wine at the Chateau Montelena was the Sauvignon Blanc..DVX wines were suggested at another winery....and another is known for their moscata, I believe. There was another winery that gave free tours of the process of making sparkling wines...but think that way maybe just at 10 am. We have so much wonderful activity planned. I know there simply isn't time to work it all in..:), but we are certainly giving it our best shot! :) I will continue this in another posting as I've reached my limit. :)

    May 14, 2014

    • Joy C.

Great! I think that is the one I read about. :)

      May 14, 2014

BTW ..the tasting is free with the tour at Mumm.

I don't think I am checking a bag. Just not organized enough to know yet but I think I am down to 2 pairs of shoes which is always my big space hog.

    2 · May 14, 2014

  • Cheryl L.

Joy asked about the wines...here's a sample of what to expect; Artesa - Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Sutter Home - Several types of Moscoato, sweet Reds and Whit Zin, Prager Port - Varied Ports, Three table wines and 3 types of vinegar, Hagafen - Rieslings and Syrah, Mumm Napa - Sparkling Whites and Reds, Sterling - many diverse varieties as they source from 14 vinyards, Hess - Malbec, Cuvee', Chardonnay, Gewurtraminer. All of the vineyards have so many varieties to choose from this is just a partial list of what is available to taste. The wines at Hess are not very expensive and I believe are only available at the winery. In addition we will be doing a wine and chocolate tasting.

I booked the rooms with AARP and AAA discounts. If you have memberships please bring proof in case the hotel asks. Thanks

    1 · May 13, 2014

    • charlee c.

I always have my AARP card with me. (You don't have to be old--you get them at 50) & it has saved me a ton of money at Walgreens, restaurants like Outback, & 35 % off car rentals & many more places. Thank you for all the ways you have been saving us money on this trip, Cheryl!

  • Kathryn T

Anyone checking a bag? I'm thinking about it (just thinking about it) but I don't want to be the only one.

    May 13, 2014

    • Cheryl L.

Kathryn, don't worry if you need to check a bag just do it. It's not that big of a deal.

      1 · May 13, 2014

    • charlee c.

Once we check in to the hotel we won't have to worry about luggage in the car & you two will need bigger luggage. I haven't packed yet (I'm not as organized as Joy--she packed last week, I think), so I might have to rethink my bag. also. Like Cheryl said, just do it. Is Laurie checking a bag?

      May 14, 2014

  • Joy C.

Getting excited! I followed Charlee's advice and have already determined what I'm eating at Skates..:) Mmm..Wish I had it now! :) Checked out all the wineries on the itinerary too. We are going to have funnnnntastic time! :)

I went to Kroger Marketplace today and walked through the wine section. I saw Chateau Montelena 2011 Chardonnay from Napa Valley...Established in 1882. The label had a picture of the castle. It received 90 plus points (92) to be exact. It was on sale for $50.99 a bottle. I also noticed there was a bottle from Krugg, one of the wineries mentioned in a video Cheryl shared. That bottle said it was the oldest winery in Napa Valley. I think I remember that from the video too. I'm going to go back and remember to bring the itinerary to check to see prices for other wines from other wineries we will be sampling. That will give us an idea as to what we can buy at home and how much they will cost as compared to the price at the wineries. There were many wines from Napa Valley. :)

    1 · May 10, 2014

    • charlee c.

Now that I think about it, the Chardonnay was the wine he won 1st place in the movie, so I would like to taste it.

      Me too, Charlee.

I'd still like to have dinner at Zuzu Saturday night, but I contacted them and they do walk-ins only. Seeing as it's our travel day I don't think we would like waiting for seating. So I've made alternate reservations at Napa Valley Bistro.

    2 · April 24, 2014

    • Cheryl L.

Joy we're doing the valley more in sections. It's recommended to go from top to bottom mainly if you are doing a one day tour or are touring Hwy. 29 on a Saturday or Sunday. We are staying off 29 on Sunday and doing the less traveled Silverado Trail. Bo's winery is Chateau Montelena as feature in the movie "Bottle shock". Our hotel is in the town of Napa.

Another good movie is, Bottle Shock is a 2008 American comedy-drama film based on the 1976 wine competition termed the "Judgment of Paris", when California wine defeated French wine in a blind taste test.

    1 · March 18, 2014

    • charlee c.

Any of you girls that haven't seen Bottle Shock, I agree with Cheryl--it's not only a great history on how California wines became well know, but a great comedy with Bill Pullman, Chris Pine & Freddie Rodriques. The son still runs the winery there as his dad (Bill Pullman) in the movie passed away a couple of years ago.

I highly recommend watching the movie Sideways. I saw it in 2004 when it came out, but rented it again. It stars Paul Giamatti--it's about 2 men that go on a road trip to California wine country & it's hilarious--just hope we don't run into guys like these. You can rent from Netflix or you can stream it.

    1 · March 18, 2014

I have seen that too. It is a good one. May watch it again. :)

I've mentioned to a few of you that I've been posting on some travel forums getting some advise on our trip. I've gotten some good feedback. Then I realized the wine travel website I'd been accessing had a message board and I read some really interesting post. So I decided to post out tentative itinerary and see what kind of feedback I got from people who do wine travel as an obsession. Here is the link to my post. http://www.winecountry.com/ubb/Forum10/HTML/000847.html

So does this mean we need to break our rule of no wine glass being dumped, for this special occasion? Considering the number of wineries, and suggestions listed above, possibly so. :) I do like the idea of ordering different choices and sampling each others, if no one is sick of course, LOL. :)

    February 13, 2014

    • Cheryl L.

These are suggestion Joy FFF rules come first. I read the tip of sampling each other wine and splitting tastings on other sites. I guess it's common.
