Happy Hour and Dinner Ole'

Under the direction of Luisa Medina, a former chef at Komali, the kitchen often turns out light and bright flavors. The dishes listed under “De la barra Sinaloense” — from the Sinaloa bar — are particularly intriguing. The refreshingly tart ceviche of Mazatlán shrimp features minced white shrimp in lime juice, cilantro and pepper. There’s a tasty mahi-mahi ceviche, too, as well as gently cooked baby octopus, served chilled and marinated in lime juice and Huichol hot sauce with red onion and cucumber. The soupy Mexican-style seafood cocktails are nice and zippy, with various combinations of shrimp, octopus and oysters swimming in a cold goblet of spicy shrimp broth and tomato juice.

And speaking of soup, I loved the “7 mares” on one of our cold early spring days. It’s a sort of Mexican bouillabaisse, a deep and satisfying bowl of seafood broth packed with assorted sea creatures.

The shrimp tacos are another hit. The shrimp come grilled, wrapped in a soft house-made corn tortilla with chipotle-mayo sauce and coleslaw. Those grilled shrimp also turn up in a salad made with romaine, roasted poblano peppers, Jack cheese and corn, in a creamy lime dressing.

I loved the shrimp tacos that Pamela & I had with the Mexican coleslaw & the happy hour margaritas were muy bueno ( Yes, I speak Spanish too, Joy--not as good as you). I like the small meetups as it is more intimate. I really enjoyed meeting Pamela--she fits in with our group perfectly. However, I left last night with both the customer copy & the merchant copy that I signed & added tip to, so I'm going to call them midafternoon to have them charge the tip as the service was excellent.
