"Adopt a Family"

  • December 8, 2012 · 3:00 PM

I contacted The Genesis Women's Shelter about helping with donations for Xmas. They have a "Adopt a Family" program - below is the email I received in return.

Donations will be collected at our annual Christmas Party or any MU event before December 15th. You may give the donation to me or any of our Event Organizers.

Hi Cheryl!

Thank you for your email! I am thrilled that you would like to partner with Genesis this holiday season!
It's really easy to get involved in our "Adopt A Family" program. All of the women and children in our program will create a wish list and we will send the wish lists around Thanksgiving to our generous community members who have chosen to adopt one of our fantastic families. Then, the donor will fulfill the wish list (wish list items include NEW toys, clothes, books, housewares, coats, etc) to the best of their ability and will drop off the unwrapped items to our Santa's Workshop location in Inwood Village from December 10-19. We will wrap all of mom's gifts and give her the children's gifts unwrapped so that she can wrap them herself and have a part in the gift giving process. It's a great way to spread magic during the holidays and to let our kiddos know that Santa can find them no matter where they are living, no matter how chaotic their home life may be. What better way to give back than by providing Christmas for one of our families?

If you are interested in being involved, please email me back and let me know the size of family you would like and I will be sure to select a fabulous family for you.

Cheryl, maybe instead of gift cards as several have already given those, with the cash we can get enough for a bike as TOC said she was thinking about. Just a thought....

    December 4, 2012

    • Cheryl L.

I think we are going to be able to buy the bike!

Cheryl, I really wanted to shop for them, but I've been down with bronchitis for a couple weeks, and think I will probably be doing all my shopping with gift cards. So, I'm going to send you a check. Thanks for coordinating...

Debbie Elliot said on FB .... "For the Adopt A Family I got boots for the Mom and daughter for Family 1."

I got a sweater for the girl in all her favorite colors. An Angry Bird shirt for the boy. For both Moms I put together a mix of "spa" items & I am going to get a small makeup bag to put the items in. And I am going to contribute to a VISA or MC for each family.

Just back from Walgreens. What I got won't matter if there's duplicates or not. but I got cosmetics & nail polish for both mom's & teen girl, Christmas candy, face cream for the mom that asked for it(store brand like Oil of Olay), 2 Walgreen gift cards, & Domino's pizza card & AMC movie card. This was fun!

Cheryl S, I agree with you about opening presents on Christmas. I'm like a kid in that regards, but I asked Crystal when she was in the Genesis program if she also got gift cards & she said yes & she really liked those as she could get what she wanted. So Chris that's a great idea. I might do a mix like Cheryl L.

I also don't enjoy shopping but I would be happy to contribute to a Visa or MC gift card for each family. That way they could use the card anywhere for whatever they need. If anyone else who hasn't already done their shopping would like to go in on them, the cards might end up being large enough that they can be used for a substantial purchase which could be especially useful to families that are setting up new households.

    November 27, 2012

    • Cheryl L.

I will probably do a mix of both.

      November 27, 2012

      So I will contribute.

I was going to get gift cards for them I was thinking it might be best to get one for each mom & one for each teen and one for each mom or would it be best to get the family one? What are your thoughts?

    November 26, 2012

    • Cheryl S.

The Other Cheryl's 2cents: I'd go for one for Mom and one for child....bet theses kids don't usually get the chance to spend. Just MHO. Whatever you decide is wonderful.

      November 26, 2012

    • Donna G

I was thinking the same thing Cheryl S. I'll get gift cards from Target for each mom & each teen.

      November 26, 2012

  • Cynthia T.

I really don't like to shop so I decided on a gift card from Kohls for each family and also a "night at movies" that has tix, popcorn and drink vouchers. Hopefully they love going to movies as much as I do :)

    1 · November 26, 2012

    • Cheryl L.

I think that they will love that Cynthia. And entertainment was actually a side note to the list, but I wasn't sure what that entailed. This is probably something that they do not have the money for.

That's a great idea! You'll probably be the one to pick the family so I urge you to choose one with teenagers. They get overlooked because it's more fun to buy presents for little kids. I see it every year on the Angel Tree in the mall -- the Angels for young children disappear off the tree immmediately; the Angels for older kids and teenagers are left hanging. By the day of the deadline for Angel Tree donations, there are always Angels for teenagers left on the tree. I always wonder what kind of Christmas those kids have.

Crystal, my daughter said it was ok to share with the ladies that she went to counseling for being a battered woman. She no longer needs to go, but the last 2 Christmases, she & her 2 kids got TONs of really nice gifts from the shelter that were all donated by Genesis supporters. Also, I've gone with her to shop at their resale shop off of Lemmon that is open to the public. We're talking designer clothes girls! And other items, too. I agree with Chris as the older kids get left out a lot. I also think it's neat that they wrap the presents for the moms wish list so they can get something nice as a lot of them since they left their abuser don't make very much money.

Thank Crystal for sharing with us Charlee.I'm glad she got the help she needed. So many people don't get help and they get involved in other abusive relationships.
