Letting Yourself Go

What would it mean to let yourself go?  Go without shaving the ol' gams, a day without eyeshadow, declining to follow your diet.  Do you relish the idea or recoil?

The Miss Representation folks recently did a Fresh Face Fridays campaign. A teen came up with this idea and they ran with it, asking people to take 5 (5 dollars, 5 minutes or 5 products) from their beauty routine, lead a conversation with friends, family, etc. about what really makes us beautiful, and tweet about it using the hashtag #FreshFace.

(Interestingly, I searched for images of 'fresh face' and almost all of them appeared to be of women wearing makeup.)

Let's talk about what influences our cosmetic choices, who we're doing it for, who benefits/loses by it, how much time and money we sink into it, what we imagine would be different if we changed our routine.

Provisos:

First of all, I'm going to make this event a women-only one in case it affects anyone's comfort level.

Second, probably most of us wear make-up at least sometimes and none shall attack another's choices or imply anyone's less of a feminist or anything.

To find us, look for the box of Crayola markers on the table.  If you don't see us downstairs, look for us upstairs:)

What a great group of people and what a fabulous discussion! Okay, I often say that. But really, it was.

A pal tipped me off to this: an eco-beauty market where you can learn about what's in that makeup, dispose of your toxy ones and find out about safer products. http://www.blogto.com/events/65565

There's web sites that offer this too (there's several, but I think this is the one that participated in Pink Ribbons Inc.) http://www.ewg.org/sk...

Hi folks, I have just moved to Toronto for 3 months from London and have been looking around for a multi-gender feminist group to be involved with. I'd really appreciate if any of you had any thoughts about stuff going on. If there are ways that I could help out your women's meetup on Saturday, please let me know - if anyone needs childcare I'd be happy to try to help. Otherwise, I'm here until February trying to deal with some burnout issues and would love to be kept in the loop about feminist discussion and action. I just signed up to the blog, but can't spend a lot of time on the net due to a disability - if I don't respond, please get me a [masked] . I don't really know activists here, so would reAlly appreciate it, thanks!
    Cheers,
    Jacob

I love how the automated confirmation e-mail's subject line reads "You are confirmed for: Letting Yourself Go". Nice double entendre conversation kickstarter there!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
