FFRF-VSUN members and friends are invited to this Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix event at the Humanist Community Center.
The meeting is free and open to the public. Breakfast/coffee is available for purchase--see details below.
Candidate Without a Prayer
If you would like Mr. Silverman to sign your copy of his book, it's recommended you do it before his talk, as he is scheduled to speak in Tucson at 3pm and must leave directly after the meeting.
Herb Silverman is Founder and President Emeritus of the Secular Coalition for America, and founder of the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry in Charleston, South Carolina.
He was founder and faculty advisor to the College of Charleston student Atheist/Humanist Alliance. He is a board member of the American Humanist Association, advisory board member of the Secular Student Alliance, and member of the Advisory Council of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
He has written for "On Faith" at the Washington Post and for the Huffington Post. He has appeared in a number of debates on topics like: Can we be moral without God? Does God exist? Is America a Christian nation? He has also debated at the Oxford Union in Oxford, England on the topic: Does American Religion Undermine American Values?
The centerpiece of his recent book, "Candidate Without a Prayer: An Autobiography of a Jewish Atheist in the Bible Belt" is the story of his challenge to the South Carolina Constitution and his Supreme Court victory, which paved the way for allowing atheists to hold public office in South Carolina.
The Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix presents their Sunday Speaker meetings twice a month on Sunday mornings.
We enjoy the company of our fellow Humanists and a lecture from a guest speaker and topic discussion ending by 11:30 a.m. Our meetings are free and open to anyone who is interested in learning more about Humanism.
Breakfast is offered for sale to members and guests for $5.00. For coffee only, the charge is $1.00. If you would like to have coffee and/or food, please pay at the welcome desk by the entrance door. Of course, donations are always gratefully accepted as well.
For your convenience, the membership desk is immediately behind the welcome desk at each Sunday meeting. Stop by to join or renew your membership in HSGP, or to update your records such as your email address.
Thank you! See you at the HSGP Community Center!
