Special Guest: Dr. Ronald A. Lindsay, President & CEO of the Center for Inquiry

Sorry for the late notice – but what an opportunity!

As a friend of church/state separation, critical thinking, and a more rational society, you will want to hear from Dr. Ronald A. Lindsay, President & CEO of the Center for Inquiry.   We are so fortunate that Dr. Lindsay will be visiting in the Phoenix area & has agreed to stay over another day in order to address us about his work & that of his wonderfully diverse organization - The Center For Inquiry (CFI).

Ronald A. Lindsay, J.D., Ph.D. is by training and experience both a lawyer and a philosopher. An honors graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, he practiced for twenty-six years prior to joining the Center for Inquiry, where he has been president and CEO since June 2008. Dr. Lindsay received his Ph.D. from Georgetown University, specializing in bioethics. He has had articles published in peer-reviewed journals such as The Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics, the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal, and The American Journal of Bioethics. His book Future Bioethics: Overcoming Taboos, Myths, and Dogmas was published by Prometheus Books in June 2008. Dr. Lindsay has spoken before numerous audiences and has appeared on radio and television to discuss issues in bioethics and constitutional law controversies.

CFI is a non-profit educational organization which serves as an umbrella over a myriad of affiliate groups & associations.  Their primary mission is to encourage evidence-based inquiry into paranormal and fringe scienceclaims, alternative medicineand mental health practices, religion, secular ethics, and society.  They cover everything from educational programs, to public policy advocacy, secular sobriety programs (alternatives to Alcoholics Anonymous which is based on a belief in the supernatural), legal action, publishing, and the list goes on-and-on.  CFI is headquartered in the United States but maintains an impressive international reach via physical offices/facilities and university exchange programs in Germany, France, Spain, Poland, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Nepal, India, Egypt, China, New Zealand, Peru, Argentina, Senegal, Zambia, Great Britain, and Bangladesh.

CFI is dedicated to promoting and defending science, reason, and free inquiry in all aspects of human interest.  Here are just some of their extensive programs:

Paranormal and fringe science claims

Through the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, publisher of Skeptical Inquirer magazine, the Center for Inquiry evaluates claims of the paranormal (phenomena allegedly beyond the range of normal scientific explanations), such as psychic phenomenaghosts, communication with the dead, and alleged extraterrestrial visitations. It also explores the fringes and borderlands of the sciences, attempting to separate strictly evidence-based research from pseudosciences.

Religion, ethics, and society

The Center promotes, through its connection with Committee for the Scientific Examination of Religion, critical inquiry into the foundations and social effects of the world religions. Since 1983 it has focused on such issues as fundamentalism in Christianity and Islam, humanistic alternatives to religious ethics, and religious sources of political violence. It is also the home of its affiliated organization, the Council for Secular Humanism, publisher of Free Inquiry magazine, a bi-monthly journal of secular humanist thought and discussion.

Medicine and health

The Commission for Scientific Medicine and Mental Health stimulates critical scientific scrutiny of New Age medicine and the schools of psychotherapy. It supports naturalistic addiction recovery practices through Secular Organizations for Sobriety.

Education

The Center for Inquiry Institute offers undergraduate level online courses, seminars, and workshops in critical thinking and the scientific outlook and its implications for religion, human values, and the borderlands of science. In addition to transferable undergraduate credit through the State University of New York (SUNY) system, CFI offers a thirty credit-hour Certificate of Proficiency in Critical Inquiry. This three-year curriculum plan offers summer sessions at the main campus at SUNY-Buffalo in Amherst and the Skeptic's Toolbox workshop at the University of Oregon, Eugene.

"Science and the Public" Master of Education program

In partnership with the Graduate School of Education at the State University of New York at Buffalo, CFI offers an accredited Master of Education program in Science and the Public, available entirely online. Aimed at students preparing for careers in research, science education, public policy, science journalism, or further study in sociology, history and philosophy of science, science communication, education, or public administration, the program explores the methods and outlook of science as they intersect with public culture, scientific literacy, and public policy.

Publishing - The results of research and activities supported by the Center and its affiliates are published and distributed to the public in seventeen separate national and international magazines, journals, and newsletters.  CFI also produces the popular weekly radio show and podcast, Point of Inquiry.

As a member & supporter of the Center for Inquiry for many, many years, I’m thrilled that we have this opportunity to hear Dr. Lindsay!  I hope to see you Saturday!
