Our next filmmaking and photography meetup is finally scheduled. usually there is a longer break between our meetups but we have the Cineworks studio for a week in December because we're working on a feature film, so we thought we'd hold our next meetup during that time.
We've just published the teaser for our feature film. If you're interested you can see it here:
I'm pretty excited about this meetup because we're trying something new. Since we have the studio, a lighting kit and a small set we want to bring you a small group of photographers and filmmakers in to do a professional fashion style studio photo / video -shoot.
Studios, lighting, models, makeup artists, stylists, sets and props are all expensive so many photographs stray away from doing anything glamor or fashion related because it's really expensive. Studio rentals (at the low end) are $30 - $50 / hour for just the space. A good studio shoot can easily cost (at the low end) easily $500 for even just a few hours of work.
So here is what our proposal is. Since we have the space anyway for our film, photographers and filmmakers are welcome to come by and use the space, lights, props, models, stylists etc for 3 hours for the small fee ($40). As many of you know our meetups don't usually cost anything to attend, but I thought this idea was worth investing in becuase I know a lot of phtoographers and filmmakers want to play and learn in a "high design" environment, but just can't afford to do so. We'll test out interest in this idea, and if people are interested then we might hold an event like this once or twice a year.
HOW THIS IS GOING TO WORK
We will bring in a model and we'll design them in an interesting way. We're not goign to do something boring and safe. Instead we'll do something high design and fun. We'll have edgy makeup, architectural hair, interesting accessories etc.
While the model is being designed at the start of the meetup, we'll start to light and design our first set.
After we get the lights set up we'll begin shooting the model. We'll take breaks every now and again to change the lights to create a different mood. This will give you a good range of material for your portfolio or demo reel.
I think we should keep it pretty informal. I would like it to be more of an open studio for photographers and filmmakers of various experience levels to come. A place to feel comfortable playing and learning. Some of you may work with studio lights, actors / models, flags, gels and sets all of the time. So for you the opportunity to shoot an interesting subject at a low cost would be your main interest.
Others newer to the fileds of photography or film may have questions about lighting, working with actors or models or setting up a set. So you can use this opportunity to ask questions and get your hands dirty setting up lights and dealing with other technical issues.
I want this event to be intimate so we're not stepping on each other. So we're looking for 10 (min) 30 (max) people to attend this event.
The event is 3 hours long and is held on Sunday Dec 12th at 5PM.
The main philosphy behind this meetup is to give you guys the opportunity to photograph or film something that will really stand out in your portfolio.
1131 Howe St - Cineworks studio
We've never had a meetup at this location before. It's a great location. It's much less fancy than the studios we've screened our work at in the past, but the venue is great for this purpose. It's a little black box studio in the basement of Pacific Cinemateque Theatre. It has the perfect ambience for an event like this. That being said, it's a little confusing to find becuase you don't enter through the front entrance of the cinema. Instead you need to walk down the little ally behind the theatre and you'll see a little parking lot, a big black door and a sign that reads "cineworks". That's where it is! Here is a map that should help you if you get lost.
Make sure you DON'T go to the Alexander st location. We've had a meetup there before, but this one is the 1131 Howe location.
Because of the number of photographers in the room and the fact this is more of an opportunity to learn and build to your portfolio, the photographs will be for personal use only. You are not permitted to sell or use the photographs or videos for commercial purposes (other than to promote yourself as a photographer or filmmaker). It's also expected that you send in your top 5-10 shots so the models can use them for their portfolio's as well.
This is not an open event. IT's for members of our meetup group only. If you know someone who wants to attend with you feel free to forward them to the link so they can RSVP.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT'S BEEN GOING ON AT ROMANTIC CHILD STUDIOS
I know many of you from past photography / film workshops and I've told some of you about the feature film that I'm currently working on entitled "Lullaby for a Lunatic". We've been in pre-production for over a year now and we finally have a teaser to show for our film. We had over a thousand submissions from actors and we spent over 4 months casting for a film we only needed 14 actors for. But our hard work has paid off and we're pretty much fully cast. You can read about the project, see the trailer and see behind the scenes production stills here:
Official website is here:
We were also recently one of 125 short films selected out of 23,000 submissions to be shortlisted by the Guggenheim museum in NYC for our short film "Mars to Jupiter". That helped us get some good press with local media outlets such as the CBC & Vancouver Sun.
Lot's of other stuff is going on, but I think that's enough info for now!
I hope to see many of you out at this next meetup. I know it's going to be a lot of fun and a great learning experience.
