I enjoy sailing but enjoy the Fire Island sailing group even more, so wanted to see everyone more than two weekends a year.
Off and on for 15 years. Also, my brother and his wife are passionate sailors with two racing boats, though I'm pretty sure that familial experience does not in any way improve a person's personal sailing ability. It does, however, make us more tolerant of sailors and their behavior.
I had to take a PE class in college (University of Guam), the thought of running around in 90 degree weather did not appeal to me, but sailing was one of the PE choices, and I love the water, so I took sailing.
I'm fine crewing but most like being the beverage deliverer with long breaks on the bow.
Waking up one day with nothing to do, my boyfriend suggested sailing, so we rented a boat and sailed around the south coast of Oahu. We stopped to snorkel, picnic and have some wine. It was a lazy, beautiful, perfect day.
The group is very welcoming to members at all levels of experience. It is a great place to learn sailing skills at your own pace and while having fun.
Hi Laurie! On Thursday I went to La Casita near the Bergen St G train stop and absolutely adored it. It's very cozy and they serve drinks and snacks. They have a nice collection of yarn and they're also really sweet and helpful. It is small but I think we could pull off a meetup there sometime. :)
