First Edition! "The Night of the Iguana" by Tennesee Williams April Meetup

  • Apr 6, 2013 · 5:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Aaron and Keri have generously offered to host a pot-luck for our April meeting and for a "reading" or maybe I should say "acting" of  "Night of the Iguana".  What this means to you, the Highly Intelligent, Wildly Attractive and Truly Gifted member is this - our meeting place and time has been changed!

We will meet instead at Aaron and Keri's house at 5:00!

The Dunphy-Habermans will most likely make a couple different kinds of lasagne so please bring

aps/sides/desserts to compliment and BYOB - YUMMY!!!!

We will be reading, or acting rather, the book and will discuss what we think of it at this time.  Pat has offered to bring the movie for our viewing pleasure should we decide to. (You don't have to act if you don't want to, Aaron has also offered for him and Keri to act out all the parts themselves. :)

WE WILL NOT BE MEETING AT 10:15 AT BARBED WIRE BOOKS!

OUR MEETING WILL BE THIS GATHERING AT AARON AND KERI'S!

PLEASE PLAN ON COMING AND WE'LL SEE YOU THERE FOR ALL THE FUN! FUN! FUN!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For April, I asked Pat Hathcock to take a turn and she is giving us the chance to do something a little different.  Her pick is "The Night of the Iguana" by Tennesee Williams. Although the short story version is available, this is a play.  Also, a really famous movie with Richard Burton.  I thought it might be an interesting change of pace.  Pat suggests the New Directions press version (green cover) as it has essays we might enjoy.  Upon investigation I see that version also has the short story upon which the play is based, included.  We all get our hands on different copies for different reasons, this is just a suggestion.  Below, Pat has included a link for us and I'm going to include a review, because I always do.  Here is how Amazon describes it;

"Williams wrote: “This is a play about love in its purest terms.” It is also Williams’s robust and persuasive plea for endurance and resistance in the face of human suffering. The earthy widow Maxine Faulk is proprietress of a rundown hotel at the edge of a Mexican cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean where the defrocked Rev. Shannon, his tour group of ladies from a West Texas women’s college, the self-described New England spinster Hannah Jelkes and her ninety-seven-year-old grandfather, Jonathan Coffin (“the world’s oldest living and practicing poet”), a family of grotesque Nazi vacationers, and an iguana tied by its throat to the veranda, all find themselves assembled for a rainy and turbulent night."

 I hope to see you there!

    I will do my best to be there, but am leaving town early Sunday, so I will play it by ear.

    I saw this performed many years ago and remember really enjoying it. It will be fun to reread it.
