SUMMARY:Longmont Book Club First Saturday Book Readers "The Magicians Nephe
 w" C.S. Lewis
DESCRIPTION:First Edition! Meets the First Saturday of the Month\n\nW
ell now that we've time traveled all over the place and back (Whew!) we can
wander around one place for awhile albeit another place a little bit diffe
rent than we may want it to be. Decembers choice is some Holiday fantasy c
hosen by Gerty. The Magicians Nephew by C.S.Lewis. The Magicians Nephew i
s actually the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia series in terms of se
quence of events. It was written as a prequel and sets the stage for the ot
her books in the series. It tells the story of two children in Victorian E
ngland who discover the World between the Woods with the different pools th
at lead them to the different worlds. The first world they enter is Charn\
, They reawaken the evil Queen Jadis. She travels with them and wreaks hav
oc throughout the remainder of the book. The next world they enter is Narn
ia\, which the lion\, King Aslan\, is just creating (Hey I'm not making thi
s stuff up\, C.S. Lewis did). The Queen interferes and becomes immortal.
Apple seeds from special trees eventually grow to be made into the magical
wardrobe for the rest of the Narnia series. \n\nHHhhhmmmmmm...a quick
read that should make for some interesting and different discussion. \n\
nThen\, post December meeting on the 13th\, we have the Book Swap to End al
l Book Swaps which I promise to be a real humdinger! It's a busy time of
year and it was decided 3:00 is as good a time as any so 3:00 is when we wi
ll begin. Come one \, come all and come as you are\, bring your best books
worth trading and plan on taking some home. Most of all plan on meeting u
p with other members for wassailing (eating) and complementing me on my Sno
w Village. \n\nAnd our January pick thank you goes to PJ after all the H
oliday rush we can have Peace Like a River by Leif Engerto look forward to.
Set in the Minnesota countryside and North Dakota Badlands of the early 1
960's it's a beautifully told story of one family's quest to retrieve its m
ost wayward member. Reuben Land\, the novel's asthmatic and self-effacing
narrator\, recounts an unforgettable journey riddled with outlaw tales\, he
artfelt insights and bona fide miracles. Born without air in his lungs\, R
euben is keenly aware of the gift of breath - and\, by extension\, the gift
of life. Time and again\, both gifts are bestowed on Reuben by his father
\, a gentlemanly soul who works as a school janitor and has the power - and
faith - to bestow true miracles. But when Davy (Reuben's brother) kills t
wo intruders who break into the Land home with evil intent\, and then escap
es from prison whilel the trial is in progress\, events seem to have worsen
ed beyond the aid of miracles. Or have they? \nEqual parts tragedy\, rom
ance\, adventure\, yarn and meditation\, Peace Like a River is an inspired
story of family love\, religious faith\, and the lifelong work and trust re
quired of both. \n\nFor February Pat has picked Margaret Atwood's "Cat's E
ye" and there will be more on that - keep you eye on this page.... \n\nSo\,
it looks like some good reading and a little fun thrown in. I hope to see
you at the meetings and thanks for all your help! \n\n*Remember we can al
l use the message board and email me anytime and start saving your books fo
r the book swap! Any suggestions for a poll? Let me know! \nTHANKSTHANKST
