Clarion Alley - just south of 17th and Valencia Street
17th St, SF, CA 94110 (map)
Here's a map of the planned route for the day (may be tweaked a bit to get around the Cesar Chavez celebration on nearby): http://i40.tinypic.com/30mr7t1.png
It's going to be a long walk, so bring water and sunglasses :)
Driving: trying to find a park near Clarion Alley is not recommended. Your best bet is to park near our end destination (21st and Bryant) and walk 20 minutes over to Clarion Alley (near 17th and Valencia).
Public transport: the nearest BART station is at 16th and Mission; if you take the Caltrain, get off at 22nd st and get the 22 over to 16th and Valencia and walk one block south. Muni has multiple connections to the area; the 12, 14, 22, 33 and 49 all have stops near to Clarion Alley.
Catapult: if you plan to launch yourself out of a catapult or trebuchet to get into the area, the nearest open space for a safe landing is Dolores Park at 18th and Dolores. If your projected flight path takes you over 1000ft, be aware that you'll need to file a flight plan with the FAA, so get on to that sooner rather than later.
Flickr will be joining us for a tour of the great street art and murals in the Mission District! We've organized speakers along the walk to talk about the history of street art in the area; at the end we'll head to a bar where photojojo has sponsored an awesome photo competition where you can win some great photo gear!
What's to see? Check out some photos of street art in the area: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=%22street+art%22+mission&...
We're going to meet at 1:45pm at Clarion alley (just south of 17th and Valencia) and kick off with a talk about the history of the Alley. We'll leave there at approximately 2:15pm and make our way along Valencia Street to 24th, tour the alleys there and end up at Asiento SF (http://www.asientosf.com/asiento/Intro.html) at 21st and Bryant at approximately 4:00pm.
I'll be updating our progress on the walk as it happens live on twitter: http://twitter.com/bhautikj
What to bring:
Bring yourself, and bring your camera (cameraphones are totally OK!), and a cable to transfer photos from your camera to a computer if you want to submit a photo for the photo contest.
I'll have a laptop hooked up to a projector at the bar afterwards, and we'll ask anyone who wants to participate in the contest to submit their favorite picture from the photowalk. I'll have a memory card reader handy, but if you need a special cable to transfer images from your camera bring that along. I'll also try to set it up so that cameraphone users can email me pictures too.
We'll screen the pictures as a slideshow, and get everyone to vote for a winner. The awesome folks at photojojo (please visit them at http://photojojo.com/store) are supplying a fabulous prize!
Looks like we're all set for a huge group and an awesome Saturday afternoon in the Mission!
Few small things:
* Weather is looking awesome! See: http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForeca...
* Feel free to tag your photos with #SFflickrmeetup and add them to this group here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/sfflickrmeetup/
* The people who run the alleys (Clarion Alley Mural Project & Precita Eyes) have asked me to remind you that while they love people taking photos of the murals: please be respectful of the artists and organizations and their wishes and don't sell the photos or use them for corporate promotions. If you'd like to seek permission to do so, please contact CAMP or Precita eyes directly:
