This inspired Meetups in San Francisco
OK folks, the details have been finalized.
Here's a map for the day:
We're meeting at 2pm out the front of Building 1, the impressive U-shaped building at the South corner of the island.
I'd strongly encourage all of you to get public transport if you can. The 108-Muni leaves on Beale, between Howard and Folsom. For those who want to join me getting the bus over - I'm going to be at the bus stop at 1pm to catch the 1.20pm bus over. This is the stop:
..and this is the schedule:
On TI, you want to get off at the second stop (the guard station).
If you can't get the bus, there is parking on the island. You can park at the log near California Ave. and Avenue N, or at the lots along Avenue of the Palms
There are limited facilities on the island, so please keep that in mind. There is the TI Bar & Grill and Oasis Cafe (possibly busy with an event on the day we are there) if you want food, and I'm still not sure where the public bathrooms are.
Please note that TI is in part funded by commercial film & photography operations on the island. Given that this is a free event, I'd please ask that you respect the TI Development Authority and refrain from using images taken of sites on the island for commercial use. If you'd like to do that, I'd encourage you to get in touch with them directly.
UPDATE #2: Attention folks going on the bridge walk - my apologies: Caltrans called me yesterday, and they can't get safety staff for next Saturday. As such, the bridge walk is postponed. I'm going to talk with the folks there on Monday and I will let you all know the new date. The Treasure Island photowalk is still on though, and that's going to be awesome anyway :D
Join Flickr and ourselves for a photowalk on the man-made Treasure Island in the middle of San Francisco Bay!
The island provides for spectacular views of the city and the bay, as well as a great vantage point to see construction work on the new East span of the Bay Bridge:
Built in 1936, it's first major job was to host the World's fair in 1939-40, and has served in it's past as a Naval base and as a location for many movie and TV shoots (notably 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade'), and has a collection of spectacular urban ruins and abandoned naval buildings and equipment:
The plan is to meet downtown at the temporary Transbay Terminal and catch the 108 Muni bus over to Treasure Island (the stop is on Beale St, between Folsom St. and Howard St.).
Postponed to a later date to be announced: the awesome folks at Caltrans have kindly set-up a spectacular photo-walk _on_ the new Bay Bridge itself. Places are very limited, so please only sign up if you are absolutely sure you can make it. The signup link is here: http://sfbaybridgewalk.eventbrite.com/
