Entrance to Sutro Heights Park (At the Lions gate)
San Francisco, CA (map)
We are only a few days away from our next meetup. (Yes, it's this Sunday!) and here are some the awesome things that we are planning with all of you:
First of all, here is the route:
Along this route we are going to see:
Parapet/ Sutro's Mansion
view toward Playland and Cliffhouse
Lands End Parking Lot
San Francisco Memorial
Lands End Trail
Lands End Lookout
Sutro Sam (still haven't seen him)
Giant Camera (We'll try to get a special showing and we'll be covering the entrance fee).
There will be a LOT of photo-taking, but we also have the best experts of the area to go along with us and tell us about the history and the area.
Woody LaBounty and David Gallagher
Founders of the Western Neighborhoods Project, which serves to share and preserve the history of the entire west side of the City. http://www.outsidelands.org
John worked as a National Park Ranger for more than twenty-five years at parks around the country including Fort Point National Historic Site, Alcatraz Island, the National Maritime Museum, and the Presidio. He's an expert on coastal fortifications, the Sutro railroad, shipwrecks and Sutro Heights.
Tom volunteers with the GGNRA and regularly leads tours of the Sutro Baths ruins. His father worked at the baths and Tom himself also worked there as a teenager. He has spent many years studying Adolph Sutro and working with other historians and archaeologists to understand how Sutro got the baths going in the beginning using tunnels, catch basins and the ocean tides.
Paul grew grew up within earshot of Playland, being lulled to sleep (or kept awake) by Laffin' Sal. He now volunteers as a docent at the new Lands End Lookout. He can talk at length about the ruins and the restoration of the area and has probably seen the baths newest resident, a river otter name Sutro Sam, more times than anybody else.
Get ready for Sunday, charge your camera (and your phone), empty your SD card and join the SF Flickr Meetup group to post your photos there afterwards:
See you Sunday at 11 AM at the Lions gate.
Since the last #sfflickrmeetup was so much fun (see below for photos), let's do another one!
Sunday, February 24th
Entrance to Sutro Heights Park (At the Lions gate), Point Lobos & 48th Ave
What are we going to do?
This time we'll discover the beautiful west side of San Francisco, starting at the Sutro Heights Park and then seeing the Sutro Baths ruins, Lands End, and the Cliff House (and probably even more).
Woody and David from the Western Neighborhoods Project will be joining us as well and will give us insights about the amazing history of some of the things and places that we're going to see.
We'll be posting details of the route and the event in the next few weeks - but please hold the date and we look forward to see you around! It's going to be a LOT of fun.
