Winner of the 2012 National Book Award for fiction and this year's selection for UNC's summer reading program, this is an exquisitely told coming of age story of a boy on a Native-American reservation whose mother is the victim of a brutal rape. The novel is told from the boy's perspective and focuses on the consequences of the rape for his family and his community. Themes from the book include race, politics, injustice, religion, superstition, magic, and the boundary between childhood and adulthood.
