RE: [flyleafbooklovers] book availability issue: November title

Oh, brave new world!  Interesting that Waffle Street is a self-published book.  We used to call them vanity press books.  This one has 13 enthusiastic reviews on Amazon but all are by people who have not provided any reviews of other books – sort of looks like a group of author fans and friends, especially as all are uniformly positive.

I think the book would be fun and interesting to read but it exists outside the usual vetting that a regular publisher provides and has none of the unbiased reviews that such published books usually garner.  So, it’s sort of a “Let the Buyer Beware!” situation.

Given the uncertainty about availability (In addition to the other uncertainties described above), it’s probably more reasonable to go with the runner-up title, especially as the two were so close.  We might discuss whether we wanted to pursue this one for a later date at our next meeting.

I decided to check out Look Me In the Eye and was interested to learn that the author is the younger brother of Augustus Burroughs who wrote the hair-raising memoir of his childhood experiences with a mentally disturbed mother called Running with Scissors that probably many of us have read.  I’m not sure what relevance this has but it’s an interesting fact.

The book probably wouldn’t appear in my top 20 list of what I want to read but I’m game if others are.

I found a web site for Waffle Street where it can be ordered or the author contacted.  I have no idea how long it would take to get it or how many copies are available.

Any of the books under consideration for November are fine with me.

Hi folks...

some book ordering glitches. First, Flyleaf tells me The Believers is slow to arrive from their re-order. this is why i have initiated voting for our next non-fiction pick in advance of our meeting, in hopes that Flyleaf will have our next book in stock at our October meetup.

the vote was close but Waffle Street came in ahead of Look Me In the Eye by a few votes, so i told Flyleaf to go ahead and order the book...however, an unexpected turn of events.

turns out they cannot order Waffle Street. it is self-pulished and not available through any of their distributors. Cori, you originally suggested this book--curious about how you heard of it?

I looked online and saw that amazon only had a couple copies in stock and couldn't find it elsewhere...so shall we go with Look Me In the Eye, which came in at a close 2nd? Is that okay with everyone? Apologies for not catching that sooner! It looks like Waffle Street has some local buzz around it since the author is apparently local and it has a positive review from a UNC Economist so I imagine it will make it to local stores eventually.
