Vegan Southeast Asian Cuisine Potluck

  • Dec 17, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • St. Stephen's Episcopal Church

Indian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Himalayan, Nepali, or any of the other numerous countries and their cuisines in Southeast Asia, are rich with spices and delightful flavors and textures.  You are encouraged to bring a vegan dish for all to experience.   Please list what you are bringing so we can have a variety of dishes, and we don't get everyone bringing rice, ha!

Here are several sites and recipes for vegan Southeast Asian dishes; just click on the country name.  Of course, feel free to use your own favorite recipe.:
Indian, Thai, Chinese, Mongolian, Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, Korea...

One thing you can do is substitute Gardein Chick'n or Beefless tips or strips (available at Target), Butler Soy Curls, or tofu for any chicken or beef in any recipe, and make sure not to use any sauces with sea creatures in them.  Just sub more soy sauce, that's what I do oftentimes.  So now you can make General Tso's chick'n, or perhaps Mongolian Beef stir fry!

Of course, vegan desserts are encouraged as well!

If you have limited cooking facilities or abilities, please, feel free to bring a beverage or maybe some fun vegan snack from any one of the many Asian markets in town. Also, help with cleaning up is encouraged!

(This potluck is all vegan, because there is a vegan couple with their 3 children coming all the way from Saskatchewan, traveling through, and this is for them.)

This is an extremely late response but I just wanted to say Thank You again to all who attended this meet-up. We were so happy to meet you all and enjoy a vegan meal with you on our way down to Disney World. Our daughters really appreciated it, too. We travelled all throughout December and into January and I am just now starting to feel settled here in Zagreb - hence finally feeling like I could get a note to you all :-) Wish we could join you all again - looks like some awesome FM VEG meetups are in the works!
    Take care,
    Shawna

Aw, what a lovely note Shawna! :) I'm glad that we were in your thoughts! I too have thought about how you folks are doing. Let me know how you fair in Zagreb in regards to finding good vegan food to eat!

Would anyone mind if I joined? I can go the grocery store later to get something to bring. Is there anything specific someone would like me to pick up?

Dan, we'd LOVE to have you come! :) You could bring some vegan egg rolls, soy sauce (or Braggs Liquid Aminos), or perhaps some iced tea or some other beverage. Maybe some wasabi peas? Welcome to our group, Dan! :)

My wife and I are planning on attending. We were hoping to make Indian, possibly a vegan Saag Aloe. Either that or Channa Masala.

I'll be late as I get done at 6 pm that evening. Weather permitting, I will come by. Asian food is my all time fave!

I'll bring some Indonesian made ginger chews if I can be there as I won't have time to make anything ahead of time.

Are we gonna do a gift exchange with gifts from Jazzy and Mumbos, like maybe draw a name out of a hat or have random items on a table for people to pick one of? A couple of people liked that idea when I submitted it a couple of weeks ago.

Doesn't everyone do that daily anyway? I do.
