SMU political science professor Cal Jillson will be giving a talk at the Dallas Philosophers Forum titled "Politics and Ethics of Texas Public Policy."
The lecture starts at 7:30; the DPF website encourages attendees to arrive early to be seated and order dinner by 7:15. Cost for the lecture is $5.
From the DPF website (http://www.philosophersforum.org/schedule_current.html):
"SMU Professor Cal Jillson is the author of a new book, Lone Star Tarnished: A Critical Look at Texas Politics and Public Policy. This book asks how Texas came to be so good at economic growth and job creation and so poor at education, health care and social provision, infrastructure development, and environmental protection. Given the demographic changes continuing in Texas, we ask whether Texas can prosper by continuing down its small government, low tax, path or whether a more activist state government will be required to meet the policy challenges facing the state."
It is very good and informative. The topic can expand more to immigration, pro business policy, public education, taxation, jobs and income levels. Time frame and current politics, nation's competitiveness, and historical background also can be future discussion. The purpose to get people on the same page is hard to achieve, but to increase mutual understanding by checking the actual data scientifically is a very good approach.
