The St. Patrick's Day SOJO (in our new location)

  • This location is shown only to members

In addition to our usual eclectic music mix, we might hear a few sea shanties and drinking songs.  (And can anyone tell us what "Whack fol the daddy o" means?)

We're now meeting in a new location!  While our regular meeting place is being renovated, we've had to come up with an alternative location for the next few months. Please be sure to log in and check out the new address when you RSVP. More detailed directions and parking info can be found in a File dated February 7 under the More tab.

If you're a seasoned SOJO'er, you already know the program, but below are all the details which may be helpful to our new members.

MOST IMPORTANT POINTS:

1. If you have a copy of Rise Up Singing, please bring it. If you don't, we may have some extras available for you to borrow (one time only, please) or buy from us.
2. Feel free to bring lyrics to hand out, preferably with chords, for songs not in the book.
3. Bring something to drink, as singing is likely to make you thirsty.
4. We appreciate but do not require, any contributions ($4, or whatever) to help pay for renting the room.
5. Please do RSVP. It helps us know how to set up the room. RSVP by clicking "Yes" above the other attendees' names.
-----------------------------------------
FURTHER DETAILS, if you like:
* Our regular gatherings take place on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month.  We meet from 2 to 5 p.m. with a break around 3:30. You can come for the whole time or just part of it. If you can arrive early to help set up and so we have a musical quorum to start, that would be great.
* Click on "Pages" for additional information such as our format and other good things to know; click on "Photos" for pictures of some of our gatherings; click on "More," then "Files" to check out the wide variety of songs we've sung at previous SOJOs.
Whether you're new to SOJO or not so new, we look forward to singing and/or jamming with you!

Reposting the kind comment from Jan (a welcome returnee who was a regular 6 years ago before she dropped out of sight), but with identification of the specific venue deleted: "It was great to see [how] much SOJO has grown! I enjoyed your round too, Margi. Loved meeting some of you during the break--and nice to hear others playing ukulele! Great to hear Freddy again on his hammered dulcimer. I like the new location [...]. I know it is temporary--but for me, preferable! Thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon with SOJO! I look forward to the next one."

In our last venue at Crystal City, 34 would have been too many. The acoustics there were pretty bad, and there were never enough chairs... This new place is better, except for your having to depend on one person with a key if you need stairs-free access.

I know what you mean. I hope it can work out for the future. In addition (and actually I can usually parallel park in a very tight space)..it would be helpful if people avoided parking right by the steps in front of the sanctuary. I had a difficult time backing out of my space on the end. Thanks to Seton for his help--I was afraid of hitting the car. I don't know whom had parked there--but a good thing to remember. Ordinarily, I could have waited--but I had a deadline to go somewhere in the District afterwards. I do hope we can continue at the church though!

My husband and I enjoyed the music and we're enjoying the book
    of music, also.

Margi - loved the Donovan song. Wish we had sung it at least 1 more time. I remember singing a round that's in Rise Up Singing and it sounded great - just wish I could remember which song.

Glad you liked it. Here's a link to the song in the film Brother Sun Sister Moon. I love the line, "Do few things but do them well." Yes, so many great rounds in Rise Up Singing. We'll have to try more.

I enjoyed my first time with the group--good mix of people and especially good mix of songs. Very impressed as well by all the talented instrumentalists.

This meet- up group was amazing. There was not a person critical of your singing abilities, and I am so glad because there was no explaining to the police. What made this group so remarkable was the way everyone participated with an instrument or just singing along which cultimated to reached the appropriate arpeggios. The church facility was great it was roomy with room for a lot of musicians and their instruments to fit, and it was acoustically sound.
As a new-comer I felt welcomed, thanks everyone!

Enjoyed the meeting. Thanks, Karen, for sharing your book and thanks to you, Carl, for helping me during the break. You gave me the confidence to actually play my song choice.

Once again, a very big group with more new people. A number of great Irish songs, as one would expect. All in all, a great afternoon.

I assume that means "yes" or "maybe," so I've RSVPd you. Makes it easier for us to count who's coming and figure out how many chairs we'll need, etc.

It is a "maybe". I am trying to work out my schedule.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
