The Groundhog Day SOJO

Here's hoping Punxsutawney Phil won't Stand in the Shadows of Love, be followed by a Moonshadow or see The Shadow of Your Smile.  :)  See you at SOJO!

Since Feb.2013, we've been meeting in a new location!  While our old Crystal City meeting place is being renovated, we've had to come up with an alternative location at least temporarily. Please be sure to log in and check out the new address when you RSVP. More detailed directions, closest Metro and parking info can be found in a File "uploaded on Feb 7, 2013" under the "More" tab.

If you're a seasoned SOJO'er, you already know the program, but below are all the details which may be helpful to our new members.

MOST IMPORTANT POINTS:

1. If you have a copy of Rise Up Singing, please bring it. If you don't, we may have some extras available for you to borrow (one time only, please) or buy from us.
2. Feel free to bring lyrics to hand out, preferably with chords, for songs not in the book.  If you'd like to bring a song that most people don't know well, see if you can find a youtube link and post it in the comments when you RSVP.  We'd like to listen a few times before the SOJO to get the hang of it.
3. Bring something to drink, as singing is likely to make you thirsty.
4. We appreciate but do not require, any contributions ($4, or whatever) to help pay for renting the room.
5. Please do RSVP. It helps us know how to set up the room. RSVP by clicking "Yes" above the other attendees' names.
-----------------------------------------
FURTHER DETAILS, if you like:
* Our regular gatherings take place on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month.  We meet from 2 to 5 p.m. with a break around 3:30. You can come for the whole time or just part of it. If you can arrive early to help set up and so we have a musical quorum to start, that would be great.
* Click on "Pages" for additional information such as our format and other good things to know; click on "Photos" for pictures of some of our gatherings; click on "More," then "Files" to check out the wide variety of songs we've sung at previous SOJOs.
Whether you're new to SOJO or not so new, we look forward to singing and/or jamming with you!

For the record, "A former member" = Angela, who left the group in order to coordinate all her Meetups administratively and rejoined under a new account. So new Angela's stats won't reflect that old Angela attended 3 Meetups.

What does it mean for one set of lyrics to a traditional song to be more correct than another?

    • Freddy

Some traditions are better than others?

Welcome newbs Inger, Steve E., William P., Malia, Dirk (new to me because I wasn't at his only other Meetup, the last, unheated, Groundhog Day one at Crystal City a year ago) and his guest Russell, Steve's guest Marla, Terri's guest Kathryn, and Wally's guest Kathy. Welcome back to Moseseses's guest Sheila. And once again, Soc was actually her daughter Erin. Full disclosure: I always give our Meetups 5 stars to inflate the rating.

We had a great time, and are starting to feel at home with everyone. It meant a lot to get together with like minded souls after the passing of Pete Seeger this week.

Loved it! Thanks once again to my friends for letting me try out my new song about Pete Seeger. It was really gratifying to hear the feedback. It was a great session overall. - Jim

I wrote a song about Pete Seeger yesterday on the plane, and I'd like to share it today. Looks like it will be a big SOJO...

It's been big of late, although I RSVPd 10 of those 46 (as of 12:10 PM) and know of only one (my brother, who's driving me) who's coming for sure. Could be some of the others will stay away just to spite me for being so presumptuous.

And, in fact, he just called and is not coming, because he got lost and ended up in Columbia on his way from Baltimore. So I will de-rsvp him.

In honor of Groundhog Day, I'll bring a song with 27 verses that all sound the same.

Changing my RSVP to no since I don't think you want me to share my sWHINE flu...

Comme d'habitude, j'ai repondu-s'il-les-plaît-ou-non pour quelques gens qui might come to SOJO but might not have the time to repondre pour eux-mêmes.

I'll be there but need to leave at the break.
