The May, She Will Stay SOJO

Wondering what kinds of songs we sing?  Click on "More," then "Files" for the lists of songs we've done at previous SOJOs.  Why not add your favorite to the list!

Since Feb.2013, we've been meeting in a new location!  While our old Crystal City meeting place is being renovated, we've had to come up with an alternative location at least temporarily. Please be sure to log in and check out the new address when you RSVP. More detailed directions, closest Metro and parking info can be found in a File "uploaded on Feb 7, 2013" under the "More" tab.

If you're a seasoned SOJO'er, you already know the program, but below are all the details which may be helpful to our new members.

MOST IMPORTANT POINTS:

1. If you have a copy of Rise Up Singing, please bring it. If you don't, we may have some extras available for you to borrow (one time only, please) or buy from us.
2. Feel free to bring lyrics to hand out, preferably with chords, for songs not in the book.  If you'd like to bring a song that most people don't know well, see if you can find a youtube link and post it in the comments when you RSVP.  We'd like to listen a few times before the SOJO to get the hang of it.
3. Bring something to drink, as singing is likely to make you thirsty.
4. We appreciate but do not require, any contributions ($4, or whatever) to help pay for renting the room.
5. Please do RSVP. It helps us know how to set up the room. RSVP by clicking "Yes" above the other attendees' names.
-----------------------------------------
FURTHER DETAILS, if you like:
* Our regular gatherings take place on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month.  We meet from 2 to 5 p.m. with a break around 3:30. You can come for the whole time or just part of it. If you can arrive early to help set up and so we have a musical quorum to start, that would be great.
* Click on "Pages" for additional information such as our format and other good things to know; click on "Photos" for pictures of some of our gatherings; click on "More," then "Files" to check out the wide variety of songs we've sung at previous SOJOs.
Whether you're new to SOJO or not so new, we look forward to singing and/or jamming with you!

Mark Erelli, whose song "Columbus, Ohio" I sang at this SOJO, has a Kickstarter going for his new album, and he could use some help. Check it out, if you feel so inclined. Or if not, then don't. https://www.kickstarter.com/proj...

We were happy to welcome one newcomer, Angie's guest Patty. We were not happy to welcome any other newcomers, so we dumped pig's blood on them and called them terrible names. (Well, actually, we didn't, because there were no other newcomers.) Please note for your records that Seton's guest was Jovani, that Russ is counted as my guest, and that Anne, who started out as the guest of her no-show sister Janet and therefore had been counted as my guest, was secretly SOJO member Angie ("Anne G.") all this time! So we welcome her belatedly as such.

Very sorry that I had to change my RSVP too. Obligations on the home front.

Sorry all I had to change my RSVP from "yes" to "no -- some family stuff came up and I won't be free tomorrow. I look forward to making it in a future SOJO

I can't make this one. We have a full wine tour on Saturday (great for business!) so I'll be working. (Hardly work going to wineries all day! LOL). Have fun tomorrow and I'll try to make one in June! :)

I have some friends who are interested in coming, what is the protocol for that?

If you're coming and they might be your guests (whether arriving with you or on their own), you can count them as such when you RSVP "yes" (a "yes," by the way, includes "maybe"). If they want to come without you, then ideally they'll join SOJO and RSVP "yes." Otherwise, you can just tell them where and when we are and they can show up, although if they're unexpected, I won't be able to welcome them by name when they arrive. (Angie, are you the Anne who was originally the guest of your sister Janet who didn't show?)

I'm very bummed. I have inner ear infections in both ears, and do not foresee being able to come to this one after all. I thought they would be better by now, but they are not. I can't tell y'all how disappointed I am about this. Hopefully I will see you the 3rd Saturday in June.

SOJOan Banjo Kicking Liz, publicity chair of the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, has sent us a press release about the free, annual Washington Folk Festival at Glen Echo Park, May 31 and June 1. Here's a link to it on our Message Board: http://www.meetup.com/folkSOJO/... -- or, under our banner at the top of this page, click on "Discussions" and then "Message Board" to read it. Details are also at fsgw.org.

Is there any room for original music if you have the chords and lyrics written in (the one I'm thinking about for this time is very easy, and very short). I hesitate to ask since this will be my first time, but I figure since that's what I know, I would go ahead and ask (the answer will not sway my decision to come or not come - I will be there).

We're open to it. A couple of our members have occasionally tried their own songs out on us and have been pleased with their reception. So when it's your turn, feel free to choose your piece and maybe teach it to us (we are quick studies).

Yay! :) Thanks for the response. I look forward to learning new songs, and singing some I know as well.

Hi it will be my first if I attend. What is the closest Metro station? Is it walking distance to the location?

Hi! If you take Metro to the Virginia Square Station on the Orange Line, the church is .15 miles SW of there. :) It will be my first as well. :)
